Chronic Inflammation and CVD

I have been interested in Inflammation and its effects on the body for some time now.  Having dealt with arthritis and sinus problems in the past, I am always looking for ways to eliminate or blunt inflammation.  Not wanting to deal with heart problems, CVD, Alzheimer’s Disease, arthritis, cancer and diabetes to name a few chronic inflammation related issues, I am always on the search for new information.  “Research has established that high levels of inflammation are strongly predictive of heart disease, and that lowering inflammation can prevent heart attacks and other cardiovascular events,” says Alexander J. Szalai, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). Szalai has spent 20 years studying the biology of one of the most hotly debated subjects in heart disease: C-reactive protein (CRP).

For the past 30 years or more, statins have been the go-to drug of choice for most physicians when CVD is found.  Lowering “bad” cholesterol, LDL,  with the use of statin drugs has turned into a big business.  It is estimated that 24 Million Americans take statin drugs each year.  And yet,  CVD is now the nation’s #1 Killer!

“It’s well-established that statins can lower the risk of [CVD],” says Robert Rountree, MD, holistic physician and Delicious Living’s medical editor. He continues with new research that “indicates the primary mechanism by which statins lower risk is not by reducing LDL cholesterol but instead by decreasing systemic inflammation.”  Reducing Inflammation.  Wow, I have been on that band-wagon for a while now. This is exciting news to me and I had to share it with you.

Fortunately there are many natural ways to reduce systemic or chronic inflammation besides statin

drugs. As you know, I don’t particularly like prescription drug side effects. Now, don’t get all up in arms, there are good reasons to take a prescription drug. However, when prescription drugs have more negative side effects than the original problem, I am not a fan! So when I read about new research that is showing that natural alternatives to statin drugs were working well and getting traction in the medical community, I was excited.   Dr Houston says of stains:  “And although statins are considered safe drugs, their use can have downsides. Potential adverse effects include muscle weakness and breakdown, liver dysfunction, and possible links to memory loss and nerve damage.”

Of course, you don’t want to give up the statins without help and advice of your physician.  But, if you are willing to make the diet, exercise and supplement modifications, over the course of time you may be able to say good-bye to the statins and hello to better health, naturally.

To follow a healthy lifestyle, follow this tips and ask for help from a functional physician.

Exercise is a must for help with cardiovascular issues.  Walk each day, stretch, join a gym or fitness center to have supervised assistance with your exercise program.  But move you must!

Increase your Omega 3’s.  Eat more Omega-3 rich foods.  Research shows EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish such as salmon, and sardines, reduce triglycerides. They also lower inflammation; scientists believe they counteract the effects of inflammatory substances and cells in the body.  Add in a high quality Omega-3 supplement each day.

Avoid simple carbohydrates and sugar.  Again research has found that eating high-glycemic foods such as potatoes, sugar, white rice and white bread increases the risk of CVD.  Eat around the edges of the grocery store, avoiding processed foods and empty calories.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are your friends!

Add anti-inflammatory supplements such as Resveratrol, Alfalfa Complex, CoQ10, Vitamin D3, Vitamin C and others.  Move towards a more alkaline body, away from acidic and enjoy a healthier life!

Good health is a choice.  What choice will you make today?

Fighting Diabetes with Diet, Shaklee Supplements & Exercise Works!

I wanted to share this testimony with you about how Shaklee Nutrition has changed Leddy’s life!  As you can see in his testimony, he went from not only feeling bad with Diabetes and high numbers in his Cholesterol, A1c and such, to feeling better than he has felt in years and on NO Medication!

The purity, quality and potency of Shaklee products is attested to in Leddy’s letter.  As I have said before in this blog, Diet, Exercise and Wise Shaklee Supplementation can make a difference in your life.  It has in mine!  Changing Brands Can Change Your Life.

“Shaklee nutrition products work and here is proof!  Hello, My name is Leddy V.

I have a family history of diabetes – my mother, father and brother are all diabetics. I have always felt good, kept my health in check and got annual checkups with my family physician. It wasn’t until August 2007 that I was diagnosed with this disease. I had not been feeling good – mostly just tired all the time, sleepy all the time and I could never get enough water! When I was diagnosed, my blood sugar was over 700 and my A1C was 12. Even my doctor could not believe these numbers!

I immediately started taking a number of medications- insulin, metformin, a diuretic, etc. to try and get my sugars under control. Even with a significant change in my diet (I had an enormous sweet tooth before and ate a lot of red meat), I could not get my daily sugars under 180-200. The “normal” range is anything less than 150 – with numbers closer to 100 being ideal. Worse than this, I felt horrible. I felt more tired than before and depression became a part of my life. I was taking 7 medications daily because after taking many of the diabetes meds, my cholesterol was out of whack too. I was desperate and really looking for anything to help me.

In January 2009, my wife convinced me, begrudgingly, to attend a Shaklee meeting with her. My wife is a 2nd generation Shaklee kid as her family has used Shaklee products for more than 25 years. She had always tried to get me to take my health more seriously – but I was a naysayer and skeptic (which is an understatement) and would never even take a vitamin. We have always used the Shaklee products in our home during our 9 year marriage- but I never thought I needed any supplements or vitamins.

However, it was during this meeting that I was introduced to Vivix. I learned about the mechanism of action and how it was supposed to work at a cellular level in the body. I also had the opportunity to hear from Jim, a Presidential Master Coordinator, about Vivix and about Shaklee’s science behind the product. Finally, I heard from a 70+ year old lady that was also a diabetic. She had been a diabetic for as long as she could remember and had been on medications for most of her life. She reported that she had been taking Vivix and had seen a dramatic decrease in her blood sugar levels – now to the point that she was actually no longer on ANY medications. My only thought at that point was…if I could just cut my medications and 3 daily injections in half, I would consider it a success.

So – on the ride home that Saturday, I agreed to try Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement. I was skeptical but desperate. I began taking the product in late January. While taking the product, I began to research resveratrol. I couldn’t believe the research and science that had been done on this one ingredient!

I also started listening to more information from Shaklee. I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Jamie McManus here in Phoenix in March 2009. She talked about the state of health today in the US – and diabetes was definitely a topic. Dr. Jamie recommended a high quality protein for diabetics (like Cinch) and also Vitalizer for a healthy balance of nutrients. I decided to add these products to my daily regimen.

I was very dedicated to monitoring my blood sugar daily and noticed, after about 60 days, that my levels were, in fact coming down. I was consistently below 170 and nearing the 150 mark. I could not believe what I was seeing – or how I was feeling! More energy, better quality of sleep, and better overall health.

I continued on this regimen and after about 4 months, I started to decrease my injections because my sugars were getting too low! When I went in to see my endocrinologist, my A1C had lowered to 8 and my sugars were definitely within range. Even better, my cholesterol was not just within normal ranges – I was on the low end of the range for LDL and triglycerides. So I continued to wean myself off my meds until my blood sugar levels were consistently normal – with my doctor’s help.

I now take NO medications at all – and continue to take my Shaklee vitamins and protein. I added extra B Complex and OmegaGuard as well.

Shaklee has given me my life back and I feel better today at 51 than I have felt in many years. Turns out, there really is something to this nutrition stuff! That’s my story. I hope it is helpful.

Below is what I currently take in Shaklee Supplementation:

1-Vitalizer Strip (80 Bio-optimized vitamins and minerals)

Targeted Solutions to Aging

Aging.  Well, we are all aging if we are over 18 years old or so!  Some of us age more “gracefully” than others.  Gracefully, meaning that we don’t physically show the signs of aging like gray hair and wrinkles as soon as others.  However, those Hollywood mandated signs of aging are only superficial.  Aging is at the cellular level and is happening everyday.

Recent research has found that anti-oxidant support can shore up your defenses against aging diseases. Oxidation and inflammation are at the heart of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, digestive problems and every other degenerative disease.

Inflammation is not always a bad thing, like when you scratch your finger on a tack and the white blood cells jump into action with the body’s inflammatory chemicals to rush in and take care of the invasion caused by the scratch. However, these same inflammatory fighting compound also go into emergency response to gradual cell damage from free radicals.  Chronic inflammation is the results when the body does not know when to stop.

According to author Jonny Bowden, PhD, should you find that you are overweight, have diabetes or dementia, you definitely have chronic inflammation. To find a measure of inflammation, you can look at your C-Reactive protein test (CRP). The CRP test measures the liver’s response to inflammatory conditions. Even though the test is not perfect, it tells you whether you have inflammation in your body. Unfortunately it does not tell you where the inflammation is in your body.

So what supplements help with aging and anti-inflammatory responses? What can I do to age better?  Here are some supplements that help slow aging by reducing inflammation.  We are fortunate that Shaklee has Targeted Solutions for Aging!  Here are a few of my favorites supplements that I take each day to help maintain a healthy body.  I may be aging, but I am going to do everything I can to slow aging and fight against those free radicals that cause cell dShaklee's CarotoMaxamage.

Astaxanthin: a powerful and potent Carotenoid found in salmon, krill, algae and yeast and is known to scavenge free radical.  Protects against damage to LDL cholesterol, cell membranes, cells and tissues in the eyes, prostrate, cervix, lungs and heart.

Found in Shaklee’s CarotoMax

N-acetlylcysteine (NAC): A primary building block for glutathione, n-acetylcysteine helps boost immunity, detox the liver, and lessen the effects of infection and oxidative stress.

Found in Shaklee Vitalizer Gold, with and without Vitamin K, also in VitaLea Gold with & without Vitamin K

Trans-Resveratrol:  The active part of Resveratrol, this anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory compound is found in red grape skins and red wine.

* Key ingredients in Vivix have been shown in a clinical study and numerous laboratory studies to improve cell defense, cell energy, cell repair, and cell performance*
* Delivers a broad spectrum of over 15 polyphenols—including ellagitannins, one of nature’s most potent antioxidants*
* Ingredients that are 10X more powerful than resveratrol alone in slowing a key mechanism of cellular aging*
Found is Shaklee’s Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement.

Proanthocyanidins: Strong anti-oxidant that protect against oixidative stress. One of the two stong anti-oxidants found in grapes seeds and skins, (resveratrol is the other), Proanthocyanidins have been shown in clinical research to have anti-oxidant protection from oxidative damge caused by smoking, pollution and free radical damage formed in our body during normal metabolism. Studies have also show anti-cancer, anti-tumor and anti-allergic protection along with prevention of cardiovascular disease.  Proanthocyanidins are compounds that appear to have more powerful antioxidant properties than both vitamins C and E*

Found in Shaklee’s Vita-E Complex and Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement and Shaklee’s FlavoMax Complex.

Curcumin or Tumeric: Strong anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. The National Institutes of Health has four clinical trials underway to study Curcumin, the active ingredient in Tumeric, for pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, Alzheimer’s and colorectal cancer.

Found in Shaklee’s Liver DTX Complex

Good Health is a choice we make each day.  Are you making the correct choices to have a healthier life, a longer life, a better quality of life as you age?  Don’t you deserve the best life has to offer?  My choice is prevention.  I am doing all that I can to prevent disease.  Prevention is better than disease care any day.  So make you choice and join me in prevention.  Stay well!

Endeavor and Shaklee Head to Space

Shuttle over Bay Lake

Wow, what a beautiful launch this morning!  Endeavor and its crew is on it’s last mission to the International Space Station.  Sad for me really.  I am a big supporter of space travel and would like to be able to experience space travel my self.  However, I don’t have the money nor probably the courage to undertake a trip just now!  But I can Dream!

My business partner, Shaklee, has a role in the continued success of the Space Program.  Shaklee has been supplying NASA with a special re-hydration product called Astro-Ade.  NASA came to Shaklee in the early 1990’s to  ask for assistance in keeping the astronauts while returning to earth.  Astronauts experience GRS, or General Re-entry Syndrome.  GRS’s symptoms include vertigo, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, disequilibrium and general debilitation occurring during reentry to earth’s atmosphere and immediately after landing. AstroAde was specifically designed by Shaklee in conjunction with NASA scientists to combat this unique set of challenges facing the shuttle astronauts.

As we go about our busy, rushed live, we too face some interesting challenges.  Fast Food has too many calories, too much fat, not enough fresh ingredients, too many processed foods with too many preservatives.  We eat entirely too many processed meals, microwave, pre-packaged food.  We have stressful lives and don’t get enough exercise, good fresh foods and the correct supplements to fill in the blanks in our daily nutrition.

Cinch Snack Bars

Our options for good health increase when we add exercise, good fresh, organic foods and Shaklee Supplements to our daily regimen.  From the Cinch Shakes, Vitalizer (80 Bio-Optimized Vitamins and Minerals)  and Vivix Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic I take each morning to the Alfalfa Complex that keeps my sinus happy, to the Cinch Snack bars and Cinch tea that I enjoy mid-afternoon, I have more energy, better blood pressure, better cholesterol and better tri-gylcerides than before I started on Shaklee products many years ago.

I still need to walk more each day and reduce stress of course!  We all need to take better care of ourselves.  So to stay healthy like the Astronauts,  Join me in Shaklee for  better health.

Prevention and Preparedness

I love to travel!  Road trips are fun to me. However, I must be ready for travel.   Before I travel I have my car checked out by my trusted mechanic.  Tires are rotated and checked, oil is changes, belts are checked for wear, fluid levels are checked, windows are washed and mirrors adjusted.  I check on road conditions for repair work and possible closures.  I also check the weather to avoid driving into a snow storm or heavy rain if possible.

When I travel I take with me maps for the trip, flashlights and extra batteries, food, water, cell phones, chargers, phone numbers written on paper,  a small amount of cash just in case I want a candy bar as a treat along the way and a blanket in case I get cold.  I check the local radio stations at the top and bottom of the hours for traffic and weather updates.

As you can see there are 2 separate but equally important parts of my trip. Prevention and Preparedness.  The Prevention is having the car checked out, belts tightened, oil changed and such.  The Preparation is having a map, a plan for the drive, having food, water and supplies for the trip and such.

While Prevention and Preparedness are different, they work together to make for a safer trip and an easier life.  Knowing the weather ahead of time I can arrange my travel time to miss most of the storm.  Knowing the roads I need to take, having the map with me, I am able to find alternate routes during the trip should there be an accident blocking the highway I am traveling.

Being flexible is important.  Road conditions change, unexpected repairs pop up, weather patterns shift, accidents happen.  But by being ready for those unexpected changes make for a smoother trip.  Having taken responsibility for knowing the route, having the car in good condition for travel and leaving early in case of a surprise on the road create an atmosphere of confidence and calm.  There is no Panic should something change along the route.

Now can you say the same for the way you approach your health? Remember, your

Be Healthy

health is the most valuable possession you have.  How much Prevention do you practice concerning your health?  How Prepared  are you for the aging process that begins to happen around age 20 or so?

Doctors and public health experts agree…..Heart Disease and Stroke, Cancer, and Diabetes—are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems. It is estimated tbat these diseases are 75% Preventable!

Primary Prevention: Diet, lifestyle, wise supplementation and weight loss can help prevent the development of diseases.  Secondary Prevention or Preparedness:  Diet, lifestyle, wise supplementation and weight loss can help slow the progression of and/or decrease the consequences of diseases that already exist.

So check out your Prevention and Preparedness!  Don’t get caught in going the wrong way on a one-way street!  It has been said, ” In Youth we lose our Health in pursuit of Wealth, but in Age we lose our Wealth in pursuit of Health.”  We no longer need to follow that plan!

Diet, lifestyle, supplementation and weight loss can help
slow the progression of and/or decrease the consequences
of diseases that already exist

An Alzheimers Journey

I have not done any testimonies on this blog, but I had to share this with everyone who will listen, read and learn.  I know the daughter-in-law of Elsie, so I have heard Elsie’s story first hand.  When the family decided to share their story, I had to pass it on!  This gives such hope to those of us with aging parents, grandparents and ourselves!  As you read this, think of those in your life that are in a similar position.

Elsie’s Journey From Alzheimers
Our Mom[Elsie] had become bed-ridden, wore diapers and seldom recognized family or friends.  We bathed, dressed and fed her.  She was diagnosed the beginning of the worst stage of Alzheimers.
Mom was prescribed Aricept and slept for 7 months.  Next they prescribed Exelon, another 3 months of sleeping.  Were Alzeimers drugs meant to keep patients sedated?  Then came Nameda, Mom became violently ill, lay in bed in pain and lost 30 pounds in less than 30 days.
We decided to stop all medications and get her on a Shaklee Supplement program to give her body the benefits of health.  She took VitaLea Gold, Memory Optimizer, HerbLax, Energizing Soy Protein and Optiflora.  Within a few weeks she started getting up on her own and showing improvements.  Then Shaklee introduced a new product, Vivix[Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic, a resveratrol based supplement].
Within a few weeks of adding Vivix Mom began recognizing family members, she remembers all her children again.  She can brush her teeth, wash and dress herself, and no longer wears diapers.  She does the dishes and sweeps the patio. When we shop she has conversations with other people.  She plays with her great grandchildren, many songs and rhymes she didn’t remember before she now sings and recites to them.  Her long term memory has returned, though not perfect, and has selective short term memory.  Today Mom is stage 1-2 Alzheimers.
A few times when we forgot to give her the supplement or when the Vivix wasn’t available she became listless and confused.  Not only is that stressful for Mom, but it makes it difficult for us as caregivers.  We now see to it that we ample supply and it always travels with us.
Thankfully, Judy, Sandy and Bill K”

Now that should lift your spirits! The function of high quality Natural Nutrition cannot be underplayed in our quest for better health.  Prevention is the way to approach aging and with vigilance we can have a healthy aging process.  Stay Well! Elise

Diabetes and Resveratrol

In a recent article in Diabetes Forecast, Resveratrol has been found helpful in several ways for those with Diabetes.  In a summary of the article from Endocrinology: “Resveratrol, a chemical found in red wine, has received a lot of attention because of studies that suggest it (or related drugs) could someday help treat diabetes and other diseases. Yet scientists aren’t sure how resveratrol imparts its benefits. Now, a study has found that resveratrol’s anti-diabetic activity may come straight from the top: the brain. Lab mice on an all-you-can-eat diet tend to develop diabetes. But when researchers delivered resveratrol directly into the brains of mice with diet-induced diabetes, their blood glucose levels dropped regardless of diet or weight. The findings suggest that resveratrol may work by interacting with receptors in the brain that control insulin and glucose levels.”  This is from Endocrinology, December 2009

In another article from an Australian researcher from Queensland, Dr.Lindsay Brown of the University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences, and colleagues conclude that resveratrol may help protect against a wide array of diseases and conditions.  “The breadth of benefits is remarkable – cancer prevention, protection of the heart and brain from damage, reducing age-related diseases such as inflammation, reversing diabetes and obesity, and many more” said Brown.
This is good news for those with Diabetes since resveratrol is available in natural supplements like Shaklee’s Vivix Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic.  Shaklee Scientists sourced the purest and most potent natural resveratrol. In fact, this extract’s resveratrol content is no less than 98%, and the amount of resveratrol found in Vivix is guided by the latest scientific studies and emerging research.  Also, Shaklee processes the resveratrol in such a way as to not have the bad side affect of diarrhea often associated with some resveratrol products.

In Laboratory Studies, Vivix Ingredients*:   * Help protect and repair cellular DNA, * Positively impact genetic regulators,  * Promote mitochondrial biogenesis,  * Slow AGE protein formation.
ALSO*:  Supports heart health and cardiovascular function, Supports brain health , Supports immune function, Supports joint health, Promotes cellular longevity, Promotes good health and well-being, Supplies antioxidants; fights free radicals, Increases cellular energy.
Stay Well, Elise
