Preparing for Holiday Stress and Weight Gain

Southern FallIt’s that time of year again.  Fall means that the Holiday season is not far off.  And that means Stress and Weight Gain are lurking, waiting to pounce again this year.  Stress can elevate your body’s levels of cortisol, and continuously high levels have been linked to long-term health impacts.

Well this year can be different!  You have the power to nip all the stress and weight gain possibilities in the bud, way before they poke their ugly heads into your days.  How can this be so, you ask?  Taking steps now, before the start of the craziness will make all the difference when the time comes.  Small steps over time make big differences.

Start by making lists of presents to purchase.  Be realistic in how much to spend, don’t go over your budget.  Stress from large credit card bills is no fun in the new year.  Find ways to give your time, your presence rather than presents.  Much more fulfilling and easier on the budget.  And usually a lot of fun as well.

Decide which parties and family events you can attend and so NO to the rest.  Keep the list small and doable so you can actually enjoy your time togetheChristmasr.  Running, tired, stressed and irritated do not make for fun party guests.  NO is a wonderful word to use when your schedule is booked to the max!  USE IT!  Say NO! and then breathe deeply.  The world will continue to spin even if you don’t make it to all the events of the season.  You will, however, appreciate and savor the ones you do attend.

Keep the decorating to minimum this year.  Pick a few favorites and display them.  Add holiday music, a selection of your favorites to set the mood each day.  Put lights on timers so you are not running around turning on trees, window displays, outside lights.  Keep it Simple!  Personally, I like replacing the throws, pillows and area rugs with holiday themed items along with those battery operated candles that flicker like real candles.  High impact visually, low impact physically.

Keeping stress lower makes for less stress eating and less weight gain.  Preparing ahead of time for attending a party will help with 15-412_180MealInfographicthe mindless snacking that can occur at parties.  I eat one of my Shaklee 180 Meal-in-a-Bars or Snack Bars before each party to help with the empty calorie munching that I am prone to indulge.  Keeping my protein intake high, as well as the full feeling I get with the fiber in the bars and shakes,  lets me enjoy a dessert item or two without guilt.  Holidays mean treats to me, so keeping those treats at a manageable limit is desirable.  And I have found that I truly enjoy the treat if it is carefully chosen, savored and admired, rather than stuffed in my mouth out of hunger!

Sabotage

Sabotage.  One of my favorite movies from Alfred Hitchcock in the 1930’s.  But Sabotage is not something I want to do to my self.  Yet, many do just that.  How you might ask?

Sabotage is “the act of destroying or damaging something deliberately so that it does not work correctly” according to Merriam-Webster dictionary.   It is sometimes thought of as a sneaky attack by an enemy, but often Sabotage is closer to home.  Closer than you might expect, just look in the mirror!

IMG_2624 webYou know what I am talking about.  You know that weight loss plan you decided on back at the end of last year, or was it the exercise plan you were “committed” to at the first of the year.  Remember?  You had plans, you had a goal, you had dreams….. once upon a new year.  But somewhere along the way, the Sabotage started and your plans were derailed.

What happened to derail such commitment?  What kind of Sabotage did you encounter?  Was it from your friends and family?  Did they invite you to dinner and offer your fattening favorites?  Did you feel you had to eat more than you had planned out of guilt?  They had cooked your favorites after all!Cake & Berries 3 4 x 3  72

Or was it boredom on your part?  Did you Sabotage yourself by mindlessly eating a bag of potato chips while watching some mindless TV program?  Did you see your favorite goodie at the grocery store and could not resit bring it home, telling yourself all along that you could control the portions each day?  Was that you?  Did you then proceed to eat the whole thing?  Then felt guilty about that?

Or was that Sabotage from your own body?  Your own body!  Well, studies have shown that when we get hunger pangs after we have eaten a reasonable meal we are often THIRSTY!  Somehow the signals get mixed up and we end up eating a fattening snack mid-morning or mid-afternoon when we should have a nice glass of water!

Water BottlesImagine that.  We need to drink more water.  Simple, clean, filtered, pure water.  H2O.  Plain and simple.  Water.  From an article I wrote several years ago, “We need to remember that your body is about 60% water, you brain is about 75% water and your blood is about 82% water!”

The article goes on to explain:  “The main thing to remember is that we need to stay hydrated each day, even in the winter.  Turns out our body relies on water to help keep our temperature regulated.  So to stay warm in the winter, drink water.”   Seems every part of our body needs water as much as our diet and exercise program!

Problems with Swallowing Capsules

Problems with Swallowing Capsules is a challenge I find in many of my clients.  They get to a certain age and seem no longer able to swallow capsules or larger tablets without pain. This affliction has people shying away from good vitamins and minerals in lieu of chewable options like babies use.  What the chewable companies don’t tell you is that, even though their products may contain a certain amount of vitamins, the saliva and digestive acids in the stomach destroy most of the vitamins before they enter Pill Man 1 75 x 1 75 300  copyyour system!  So chew all you want on those gummy like substitutes, but don’t do it for nutritional value!

After much research, I have found a few solutions that help!  One is to realize that you swallow food each day without problems, so swallowing a pill is not harder.  It seems when we look at a tablet or capsule, we think it is going to be difficult, so it is.  Our thoughts make it hard.  Decide you can swallow those supplements and it will be easier.

Another thing adults do is to take a big gulp of air as they are trying to swallow vitamins or medicine.  This gulp of air gets caught in the esophagus, causing pain and then some burping.  You don’t take big gulps of air when you eat food, so why do that when you take a vitamin?  Humans!

Some friends eat a few bits of popcorn or a little cracker as they are taking their supplements and medications.  The chewing and swallowing of food mixed with the mock chewing and swallowing of capsules aids in the success of the getting your vitamins down without problems!

Now I don’t like to take a handful of vitamins myself as some of my friends do.  I take my supplements one or two at a time with my Shaklee 180 Smoothee or a glass of water.  Put the capsules in your mouth, and gently make a chewing motion with your mouth.  Now, don’t bite the capsule, just pretend to chew.  This will signal the brain that something larger than water is about to be swallowed and the throat will naturally open wider.  After a few mock chews, swallow the capsule or tablet.  If you need to add a little water, you can do that when you put the capsule in your mouth.  But not too much!

Traveling and Eating Well: Fuel for the Body

Summer is the time when we all seem to be on the road, in the air, or cruising to exotic lands.  I like to travel, but find I have to watch my eating or I will gain more pounds than I need.  Road trips and airports have many things in common:  fast food and stress! 

I have in the past experienced a weakness for french fries from several different fast food eateries.  Burger and Fries jpgHowever, the overall effect of those high calorie, high fat goodies is not especially positive.  I find that eating french fries is less satisfying now since they tend to be a heavy carb load that is difficult to digest when seated for extended periods of travel.  Sign…sad but all too true.  Just because the taste buds once liked a food, doesn’t mean the food was particularly good for me.  And now that I don’t eat them often, the taste buds don’t seem as enamored of them!

So now I avoid the fast food carbs, but still need to eat as I travel about the South in my automobile or fly across country.  Food for me has long been fuel for my body.  I have worked hard to remove the “treat” side of thinking about food, and moved to looking at what I consume each day from a fuel efficient point of view. 

It is kind of like shopping, you want the best value for your dollars spent when purchasing new cars, houses, and clothing. Purchasing quality fabrics in clothing with classic styles rewards me with items that outlast trends, acting as the backdrops to accessories for a modern look.  I do the same with food in a way, I look for the best value of protein and fiber to the carbs in each food.  That way I get a food that fuels me with good amounts of protein, enough good carbs for energy and fiber to keep me from getting hungry too quickly. 

Traveling is fun when you think ahead, planning what to take in the way of clothing, shoes, jackets and accessories.  Making lists of what to wear each day for each event, packing according to the list and sticking to the list, makes for an easy vacation.  No decisions to be made, it is all on the list!  But if a new souvenir in the form of a great scarf invades, of course the list gets modified and the new scarf is added to the rotation.b22030

Most people think that governmental agencies ensure that our water’s clean. And while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Clean Water Act to safeguard our water supply, it only set standards and testing requirements in our municipal water treatment facilities for 114 different contaminants out of literally hundreds more.

In fact, the Environmental Working Group obtained test results from a database of over 20 million records from state water officials to determine the quality of drinking water in 45 states. The results revealed 316 contaminants were present in our water supplies. Among them were 202 chemicals that aren’t regulated by any safe water standards.i

So yes, your water looks clean. But really, it’s not.

Why Filtration?

The simple answer? You either use a filter or you are the filter.

Only 2% of all treated water is used for drinking water. The rest is used on your lawn, shower, laundry, or used for farms or industry. It’s simply too time-consuming and expensive to test and remove the thousands of chemicals that may be present in any particular water source.

Hurricane Season, Again!

Hurricane season is here! And a Hurricane is heading towards the US as I write. Hurricane Isaac is expected to make its way into the Gulf of Mexico and send rain, winds and high surf up the West Coast of Florida, the Florida pan-handle and the Alabama coast. Depending on how long the storm is over the warm Gulf waters, the storm could increase in intensity before landfall. So now is the time to get ready!

And are you prepared? Just what does “prepared” mean when we talk about hurricanes and other severe weather during the summer and early fall? Can we truly prepare for a disaster? Well, yes we can and it is that preparation that often makes a difference in how we survive the storm and then cope the following days.

Severe storms come in different forms all over the world. From Hurricanes to Tornadoes to Severe Thunder Storms to Ice Storms and Blizzards, severe weather affects everyone at some time in the year. And let us not forget wild fires and forest fires along with earthquakes. All of these are catalysts for changes in our behavior and lifestyle for a few days to months. How well you are prepared for these changes ahead of time affects how well you manage after the event.

Every Severe Weather Event is different.Having been through 4 Hurricanes in a row, each 3 weeks apart, in 2004, I can tell you from experience that each storm was very different.Starting with Charley, who banged on my home with 100+ MPH winds for over 30 minutes and dumped more rain than I can imagine in the two days of him being around the state. Each storm hit from a different direction, bring winds at different speeds and angles, hitting the house. Rain came in at unusual places, like down drainpipes and air vents.

I was not as prepared as I should have been, but I had the basics down even then:

My vehicle was fueled and ready to roll should I have to evacuate. Back into your garage so exiting will be easier should you need to leave.

I had cat carriers ready for the trip along with cat food, litter and their Vet papers.

My important papers were together in a water proof box in my safe place (interior powder room on the ground floor).

Food and water were ready as were clothing should we need to move quickly.  Protein Shakes, snack bars, peanut butter, crackers, apples, bananas and utensils were packed. I also had cleaning supplies in small quantities.

I even had plastic buckets for putting the furniture up high off the floor should flooding become an issue. Soft goods were moved to the top floor in plastic Space Bags when possible.

Doors and windows were covered as much as I could by myself, and the garage door was secured and braced.

I had a portable battery operated TV (now useless since the Digital Revolution has taken over, so much for progress!) along with flash lights and extra batteries. Now I even have a wind-up radio with weather band and AM/FM channels.

Cell phones were charged since you can text if voice is down.  Have a car charger too, just in case the power is off for more than a few days.  Solar charges are great to have, more expensive, but very useful in an emergency.

NOAA radios are a must. You need to know the changes in the path of the storm, since they do wobble around, not on a straight path.

Have tarps, plastic sheeting, ropes, duck tape, hammer and nails, ladder and anything else that might help you secure your home after the storm has passed. Be Careful.

So my main message is to be prepared for those coming storms whether they are cold weather or hot weather storms, fires or earthquakes. It takes a few hours each year to update your food and water supply, refresh your clothing, add paperwork as necessary and refresh your plan!

Be Smart: Get ready and be safe. You can survive if you think and act ahead of the storm.

“Cinching” Preparation

Being Prepared for storms and severe weather has been one of my ongoing themes since I started this blog.  Living in the South, I have experienced 4 hurricanes whiles living in Central Florida (all in 2004) and more tornadoes than I care to remember, along with ice storms, snow storms and ferocious thunder storms with straight line winds and hail.  Life in the South is not calm when the seasons change, during hurricane season (June 1st- Dec 1st), and any time cold air runs into warmer. moist from the Gulf.

Being prepared for these weather events along with fires and earthquakes just makes sense.  However, lately there has been lots of talk about storms on the sun causing problems with our power grid and such.  So that has brought to mind again the need for being ready for any major event in our area that might knock-out the power for a few days or even weeks.  The tornadoes of 2011 brought close to home the sad fact that power lines, water and gas lines are all fragile when it comes to the strong influences of nature.

Naturally, I want to be as ready for the next event as anyone else.  And that realization that the power grid might be in danger from the actions of the sun, made me realize even more that being prepared is a prudent idea.  Among the items that I intend to add to my small stash of food items are canisters and packets of Shaklee’s Cinch Shake Mixes and canisters of Shaklee’s Instant Protein.

with milk or soy milk and 23 vitamins and minerals.  What I like about the Cinch shakes and the Instant Protein is that they can be mixed with water just as well as milk.  Since the shake mixes and Instant Protein are lactose free, they are great for everyone in the family.  I often add an additional scoop of the Instant Protein to give me an extra boost on those long, busy mornings when lunch might be delayed.

To go along with the Cinch Shakes, etc, I am adding another bottle Shaklee’s Basic H2 Super Organic Cleaning Concentrate to my next order.  I use Basic H2 each day for washing dishes, cleaning counter tops, cleaning up after the cats and more.  Since it is so concentrated, a 16 ounce or 32 ounce bottle will last for a really long time normally.  However, in an emergency situation where hot water and general cleanliness might be harder to keep, the larger the bottle of Basic H2 the better.  Remember to also add some of the spray bottles so you can dilute the Basic H2 for dishes, windows, general cleaning and de-greasing.

I am adding another bottle of Shaklee’s Basic G Concentrated Germicide for those extra dirty days of having to keep things clean in difficult conditions.  Basic G not only is a germicide it also cleans as it gets rid of germs.  Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can wreak havoc on your family’s health and safety. Used as directed, Basic-G tackles over 40 of these pesky microbes, including several animal viruses. That makes it an excellent choice for use in the kitchen, bathroom, or pet area. In addition to being economical – one quart makes up to 64 gallons – it’s also EPA registered.

For ease and convenience during a disaster, both Shaklee’s Basic H2 and Basic G come in handy to use wipes.  Tuck a few of these in your emergency kits along with the larger concentrate bottles.  The convenient bio-degradable wipes will be easy to use on small jobs, making life a little easier.

Thinking about being without power for a few weeks as well as the possibility of not having access to grocery stores, banks or gas stations drives home the need to keep on top of what is stored at home.  When the first hurricane hit in 2004, Charlie it was named, the area around me was without power for week or longer, in August!  I was lucky that my power came back on in about 24 hours since I lived between 2 hospitals and power was restored to them quickly.  Gas stations were without power as were the grocery stores and banks for a while.  Therefore, think ahead, keep the gas tank of the car as near to full as possible, keep some cash in a household safe, and fill-up the larder with Shaklee’s great products, some nuts, water, pet food, first aid kit, solar powered flashlights, solar powered radios, (alternative power radios & lights from C Crane are great!) and anything else that comes to mind!  Preparation is necessary.
