Fighting Diabetes with Diet, Shaklee Supplements & Exercise Works!

I wanted to share this testimony with you about how Shaklee Nutrition has changed Leddy’s life!  As you can see in his testimony, he went from not only feeling bad with Diabetes and high numbers in his Cholesterol, A1c and such, to feeling better than he has felt in years and on NO Medication!

The purity, quality and potency of Shaklee products is attested to in Leddy’s letter.  As I have said before in this blog, Diet, Exercise and Wise Shaklee Supplementation can make a difference in your life.  It has in mine!  Changing Brands Can Change Your Life.

“Shaklee nutrition products work and here is proof!  Hello, My name is Leddy V.

I have a family history of diabetes – my mother, father and brother are all diabetics. I have always felt good, kept my health in check and got annual checkups with my family physician. It wasn’t until August 2007 that I was diagnosed with this disease. I had not been feeling good – mostly just tired all the time, sleepy all the time and I could never get enough water! When I was diagnosed, my blood sugar was over 700 and my A1C was 12. Even my doctor could not believe these numbers!

I immediately started taking a number of medications- insulin, metformin, a diuretic, etc. to try and get my sugars under control. Even with a significant change in my diet (I had an enormous sweet tooth before and ate a lot of red meat), I could not get my daily sugars under 180-200. The “normal” range is anything less than 150 – with numbers closer to 100 being ideal. Worse than this, I felt horrible. I felt more tired than before and depression became a part of my life. I was taking 7 medications daily because after taking many of the diabetes meds, my cholesterol was out of whack too. I was desperate and really looking for anything to help me.

In January 2009, my wife convinced me, begrudgingly, to attend a Shaklee meeting with her. My wife is a 2nd generation Shaklee kid as her family has used Shaklee products for more than 25 years. She had always tried to get me to take my health more seriously – but I was a naysayer and skeptic (which is an understatement) and would never even take a vitamin. We have always used the Shaklee products in our home during our 9 year marriage- but I never thought I needed any supplements or vitamins.

However, it was during this meeting that I was introduced to Vivix. I learned about the mechanism of action and how it was supposed to work at a cellular level in the body. I also had the opportunity to hear from Jim, a Presidential Master Coordinator, about Vivix and about Shaklee’s science behind the product. Finally, I heard from a 70+ year old lady that was also a diabetic. She had been a diabetic for as long as she could remember and had been on medications for most of her life. She reported that she had been taking Vivix and had seen a dramatic decrease in her blood sugar levels – now to the point that she was actually no longer on ANY medications. My only thought at that point was…if I could just cut my medications and 3 daily injections in half, I would consider it a success.

So – on the ride home that Saturday, I agreed to try Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement. I was skeptical but desperate. I began taking the product in late January. While taking the product, I began to research resveratrol. I couldn’t believe the research and science that had been done on this one ingredient!

I also started listening to more information from Shaklee. I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Jamie McManus here in Phoenix in March 2009. She talked about the state of health today in the US – and diabetes was definitely a topic. Dr. Jamie recommended a high quality protein for diabetics (like Cinch) and also Vitalizer for a healthy balance of nutrients. I decided to add these products to my daily regimen.

I was very dedicated to monitoring my blood sugar daily and noticed, after about 60 days, that my levels were, in fact coming down. I was consistently below 170 and nearing the 150 mark. I could not believe what I was seeing – or how I was feeling! More energy, better quality of sleep, and better overall health.

I continued on this regimen and after about 4 months, I started to decrease my injections because my sugars were getting too low! When I went in to see my endocrinologist, my A1C had lowered to 8 and my sugars were definitely within range. Even better, my cholesterol was not just within normal ranges – I was on the low end of the range for LDL and triglycerides. So I continued to wean myself off my meds until my blood sugar levels were consistently normal – with my doctor’s help.

I now take NO medications at all – and continue to take my Shaklee vitamins and protein. I added extra B Complex and OmegaGuard as well.

Shaklee has given me my life back and I feel better today at 51 than I have felt in many years. Turns out, there really is something to this nutrition stuff! That’s my story. I hope it is helpful.

Below is what I currently take in Shaklee Supplementation:

2 teaspoon VIVIX one morning & one night

1-Vitalizer Strip (80 Bio-optimized vitamins and minerals)

10 Tablets Alfalfa Complex

1 to 2 tablets B-Complex

4 soft gels OmegaGuard

2 tablets NutriFeron  Immune Support

In addition to the above…..I take the Cinch Inch Loss Plan for 2 meals daily (breakfast and lunch) Cinch Shake Mix: Soy Protein I do mine with water you can use milk or soy milk, coconut milk,

2 capsules Glucose Regulation Complex    This is what I take to regulate my Blood sugar along with a 3 to 4 mile walk every other day and one good meal for supper (no fast food at all)

Body Mass Index–Is it an Accurate Obesity Measure?

We all are bombarded with information about BMI, Body Mass Index and personally, I find BMI  a frustrating measure.  I have seen policemen with more muscles than I could count, no fat anywhere, being told on a BMI chart that they are Obese!  Really?!  So when Dr McManus sent this letter I felt I finally had additional options of finding out body fat percentage.  Enjoy Dr McManus’ article.

This is from  Jamie McManus, M.D., FAAFP Chair of Medical Affairs, Health Science, & Education, Shaklee Corporation.

Body Mass Index — Is It the Best Measure of Obesity?

For decades, public health officials and doctors—including myself—have relied on Body Mass Index (BMI), a number calculated using height and weight, to categorize people as overweight to obese. That’s because we know in most cases BMI correlates highly with body fat and serves as a good gauge for assessing one’s risk for diseases, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and several other diseases.

However, what you may not know is that BMI is not a perfect measure. In some cases it may actually overestimate body fat—especially if you’re an athlete or body builder with a lot of lean muscle mass. If you’re older or have low bone density, it may actually underestimate body fat. In fact, some researchers believe the use of BMI may be leading us to underestimate the already out-of-control obesity rates here in the U.S.

A recent study revealed that almost half of adults whose BMI placed them in the overweight category (BMI 25–29.9) actually would be considered obese if their body fat percentage were taken into account!

So how do you test for your body-fat percentage? There are several ways to determine this number, which may very well be the best way to assess where you fall along the overweight-to-obese continuum. Here are the top four methods:

Hydrostatic under water weighing is considered to be one of the most accurate methods (the “gold standard”), but has its limitations. For one, it requires that you exhale as much air from your lungs as possible before being immersed for 10 to 15 seconds under water, and two, it’s not widely available.

Bioelectrical impedance is based on the fact that lean body tissue is much more conductive than fat tissue because of its higher water content. A bioimpedance meter is attached to the body and measures the body’s ability to conduct current. It’s noninvasive but less accurate than underwater weighing.

Skin-fold measurements also are less accurate, but are commonly used by nutritionists and dietitians. Several skin-fold measures are taken on different sites on the body using a caliper device, then used to calculate body-fat percentage. Look for someone well trained in this method as large inaccuracies can occur due to technician error.

DXA, known best for its utility in measuring bone density, also has been used in clinical and research settings to measure body composition. Today you may find it used in weight loss clinics, with professional sports teams, and even on reality TV! NBC’s The Biggest Loser ™* has used this method to chronicle the dramatic weight loss of the show’s contestants.

So, although not perfect, BMI is a useful starting place to assess your body weight. Combine this with body-fat testing, and together you’ll have a more accurate picture of whether you are at a healthy weight (and body fat), or if you are overweight or obese. You can’t attack a problem if you don’t know you have a problem, so let’s all be accountable for our weight since it is such an important predictor of health. And remember, too, that if you are overweight, even modest changes in body weight (5%–10%) can help lower your risk of weight-related diseases and improve your health.

Cinch, Brad Lamm, Dr Oz and Weight!

In 2011, Shaklee teamed up with Brad Lamm, a board-registered interventionist who has worked on The Oprah Winfrey Show in addition to his spot as a regular contributor on The Dr. Oz  Show.   Brad has a Powered By Shaklee Tourbrand-new book, Just 10 Lbs,in which he provides insight into the various emotional triggers that may result in weight gain and/or get in the way of weight loss.

His focus is on “just getting started,” beginning with “just 10 pounds!” Brad loves Cinch and uses Cinch products every day; he mentions this in the book. So don’t get overwhelmed by the number of pounds you may need to lose. Just focus on those first 10. And when you’ve accomplished that, you can stand up to the next 10.

Today, over 65% of American adults are overweight – an alarming statistic! Overweight is established using an individual’s height and weight to measure body mass index, or BMI. An adult with a BMI of 25 or higher is considered overweight.

So where are you with your weight? Is your BMI less than 25? If not, it is time to get serious and get “Cinched”! If you’re already at a healthy weight, reach out to those around you who aren’t. Click here to read more about Brad’s book – an invaluable tool to help you on your Cinch path.

Is What You are Eating Worth Dying For?

Recently I have a friend who was told she has some per-cancerous cells, cells that are not looking healthy.  Her doctor offered her 3 options if the cells did not look better in a few months.  The three options were Surgery, Steroids, and Chemotherapy.  None of these sound good to me.

What the physician did not offer were suggestions for healthier cells.  The Doctor did nothing to help her change the reason the cells were looking bad to begin with!  It only makes sense that if you keep on doing what you have been doing, you are going to keep on getting what you have gotten.  You cannot keep eating too many calories each day with no exercise and expect to loose weight.  Not going to happen.  Hence the lap-band surgeries and such for the obese.  Oh my!

I sent my friend several pages of suggestions on how to stop or curb cancer’s growth from as assortment of different Natural Physicians, Nutritionists, Bio-Chemists and Cancer researchers.  My friend read through the suggestions and the response was not what I had expected, I can tell you!  Her response was that “these people want me to give up my favorite foods” and I don’t want to do that.

I asked, “So you are telling me that the prospect of loosing your hair, being nauseous, going to the hospital for weeks on end for treatments, being sick, maybe even dying is more appealing than changing your diet so you can live a longer, healthier life?”  Yes, was her response.  I cannot print my un-ladylike response to that answer.

Really, are you taste buds so much in power over your decisions that you cannot give up a few things in moderation to be healthier?   The suggestions for helping your body fight cancer cells and creating an environment where the cancer cells are not being fed included eliminating sugars, dairy and meats.  Cancer cells use glucose, carbohydrates, to grow.  So not eating breads, cookies, cakes and such while fighting cancer is not so bad if you have a quicker, healthier recovery.

Keeping your body as alkaline as possible is also suggested.  I use Alfalfa Complex each day to keep my sinus issues at bay and help keep my system alkaline, so taking that kind of supplements is not an unusual.  Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding carbohydrates, dairy and bad fats, eating fresh fish rich in Omega3’s and non-GMO soy protein are not bad things!

I just hope others will make a different choice when told they have “ugly cells” and are willing to make a few changes on their own for better health.  Doctors are not taught about nutrition as they should be, nor are they taught other options for getting better.  Doctors are taught to control diseases, not keep you well.  Just the way the system works for the most part.  Thankfully, there are a growing number of Natural Physicians who look at a bigger picture of wellness and disease.

So when you are faced with a similar situation, what will your response be?  Will you decide that eating what you have been eating is worth dying for? Stay well, Elise

It’s a Matter of Life or Death

Your weight.  It is a matter of Life or Death.  Your Life or Your Death.  What will you choose?
Fact:  1 out of 2 obese people will die prematurely due to complications associated with their weight.
Health Consequences:
Stroke
Dyslipidemia
Hypertension
Osteoarthritis
Type 2 diabetes
 Gallbladder disease
Coronary heart disease
Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

Why most diets fail: You Lose Weight from Lean Muscle & Fat, That leads to a  Reduced Metabolic Rate, which leads to an Increase in Fat Storage
Then:  with a Reduced Metabolic Rate and the Loss of Muscle you Regain Weight from Fat.  YoYo.

This vicious cycle is repeated over and over each time you try to lose weight incorrectly.  To lose weight the right way, you need to prevent muscle loss.
Why?  Because Muscle = Metabolism.   Stop YoYo-ing!

Shaklee has a Weight Loss program that is powered with an essential amino acid called Leucine.  The products in the Cinch Inch Loss Plan are formulated to help you break the vicious diet cycle.

  • Cinch contains a proprietary clinically tested LEUCINE formula*
  • Leucine is an essential amino acid that helps you lose weight the right way
  • Leucine helps the body retain and even build lean muscle
  • Leucine supports a healthy metabolism by preserving muscle

Weight Loss Tips for 2012

So how are you doing with your 2012 Resolutions?  Had any results yet?  Started yet?  I know.  It is hard to get started on some of these crazy diets that float around this time of year!  Changing habits is hard.  We all like doing the same things since that gives us a sense of security and continuity in our lives.  Control too if we will admit it.

Take Those Measurements

However, if your goal is to loose some of those unwanted pounds, there are some things you can do to make the new habits easier.  First of all, weight and measure yourself so you have a base measurement for future comparison.  Take a photo of yourself in comfortable clothing, like a T-shirt and gym pants.  Between the measurements and the photo, you will have a good baseline.

Now, habits take a while to change.  So make only a few changes in your diet and exercise at first.  Making only a few changes will help you achieve results quicker.  Focusing on only a few changes is easier and you don’t feel out of control.  Make a short list, create a chart of those few changes and note your progress each day.

Easy Changes that Work:

1.  Add Filtered Water each day.  I have talked so much about how our bodies need quantities of filtered water so check out some of my previous posts.  I drink about 10 to 12 cups of water each day.  My skin is healthy, my body feels good and I get rid of toxins.

2.  Add Exercise each day.  Park further from the door of work or at the grocery store.  Take the stairs up a few flights instead of the elevator.  Walk the dog or the neighbor’s dog each day.   A brisk walk around your neighborhood, just move.  On really hot or really cold days, I walk in my house, listening to a learning CD, but moving for at least 45 minutes.

3.  Add Protein while cutting Carbohydrates.  I use Shaklee’s Cinch Snack bars which give me a low glycemic option each day.  They are crunchy, filling because of the fiber and have the right balance of protein to carbohydrates.  You need carbs to burn fat!  So don’t completely cut out the carbs.  But having too many carbs is bad.  So watch the balance.  Add the good Shaklee Cinch protein, clinically proven to work.

4.  Add Fiber to your diet in the form of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables.  Avoid grapes and tomatoes as they have high sugar and low fiber.  Crunchy goodness like apples give you fiber, good carbs and vitamins.

5.  Take your Measurements and weigh once a week.  If you are loosing fat and not muscle mass, the inches will drop more than the pounds at first.  Muscle mass weighs more than fat!  And building up muscle mass is important to maintaining a healthy weight.

Make slow changes, be consistent and watch that extra weight gently fall off and stay off.  Stopping the YoYo diet cycle is crucial to keeping the weight off. Cinch was created to stop the YoYo diet cycle.  For more information on Cinch, look at this siteStay well and healthy in the new year!

The HCG Controversy

Recently I was attending a meeting and heard from 2 different people that they were using the “amazing HCG diet”.  HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin.  ” Take these drops or injections (depends of the plan) and stick to a 500 calorie diet each day and you will lose about a pound a day” one person said.  Well in my experience if you are on a 500 calorie diet, you will lose weight! No surprise there.

But the people insisted that this was “the way” to get back into shape.  No hunger pains, no exercise, no real work or worry.  I would worry about taking something that the FDA has not looked favorably upon.  I would worry about cutting my food intake so much that I was burning more that fat in order to “lose weight”.  If things are too easy, most times there is something wrong with the process.  But these 2 people were sticking to the plan.

In January 2011 and an updated statement in December 2011, the FDA issued statements saying that homeopathic HCG products are illegal.  “The FDA is warning consumers that over the counter HCG products marketed as weight loss aids are unproven and illegal. Many HCG products are marketed to be taken in connection with a very low calorie diet — it’s the decrease in calories that accounts for any weight loss. There are currently no FDA-approved HCG products designed to help you lose weight. FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have jointly issued warning letters to companies illegally marketing over-the-counter HCG products labeled for weight loss.”

Letters have been sent to 7 different companies according to the FDA statement. “FDA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have issued seven letters to companies warning them that they are selling illegal homeopathic HCG weight-loss drugs that have not been approved by FDA, and that make unsupported claims.”

These companies are:

Nutri Fusion Systems, Inc
Natural Medical Supply, LLC DBA HCG Complete Diet
HCG Platinum, LLC
Theoriginalhcgdrogs.com
HCG Diet Direct, LLC
Hcg-miracleweightloss.com

For more information on the HCG diets and their negative side effects, visit the FDA website.
According to the FDA site, “Living on 500 calories a day is not only unhealthy—it’s hazardous, according to FDA experts. Consumers on such restrictive diets are at increased risk for side effects that include gallstone formation, an imbalance of the electrolytes that keep the body’s muscles and nerves functioning properly, and an irregular heartbeat.

Shirley Blakely, a nutritionist at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, echoes concerns about such restrictive diets. They can be dangerous, she says, and potentially fatal.”

Of course I am partial to the clinically proven, natural weight management system from Shaklee call Cinch Inch Loss Plan.  Loose inches, keep the muscle mass you need and loose the fat you don’t need.  Muscle mass = metabolism.  The main thing is to lose the weight safely, slowly and in a manner that breaks the “YoYo” diet cycle!  Stay well.

Hidden Sugar can Derail Your Weight

You know when you eat a candy bar or a few cookies that you are eating sugar.  You plan on those calories and carbohydrates.  However, you don’t expect to find high amounts sugar in some of those “healthy” sounding beverages or in “weight loss” foods do you?  I did not think about pasta sauces having loads of sugar!

I recently read an interesting article where the author, Elaine Magee, MPH RD, explored some hidden sugar in our commonly used foods.  Foods that are often marketed as “healthy”.  Foods that are not associated with sugar in our general mindset.

Being hypoglycemic, I have to be careful of my sugar intake or I feel bad quickly and have even fainted! Not fun.  So reading Elaine’s article was eyeopening.  Here are a few things that caught my eye.  Hopefully they will point the way for you to read more labels and be aware of the possibility of hidden sugars.  Keeping weight down, keeping sugar in check for a diabetics while  feeling better is our goal each day.  Wellness is better than Disease Care!

Sugar Cubes

Sugar Cubes

Seems like sugar hides in strange places!  Did you know that Sugar is the first ingredient listed in Fiber One’s muffin mix?   A muffin’s worth of mix contains 15 grams of sugar.  Fiber One Muffin Mix,
Apple Cinnamon: 1/4 cup mix (as packaged) = 15 grams sugar, 130 calories.
Also, in Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars (all flavors): 1 bar = 12 grams sugar, 130 calories.  Now that is is shock since you think these bars are “healthy”.

Elaine found sugar in Pasta Sauces too.  Now I am not a big fan of pasta, but all my friends and family love pasta dishes and boy, do they have a surprise coming!   According to Elaine’s research for WebMD, popular pasta sauces:                                                                                               Newman’s Own Tomato & Basil: 1/2 cup = 12 grams sugar, 90 calories
Bertolli Vineyard Marinara: 1/2 cup = 12 grams sugar, 80 calories
Prego Fresh Mushroom Italian Sauce: 1/2 cup = 11 grams sugar, 90 calories
Prego 3-Cheese: 1/2 cup = 11 grams sugar, 80 calories

So learn to read labels.  Learn the different names of “sugar” such as natural sugars from fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose) as well as added sweeteners like refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup.  Keeping a healthy weight is a challenge for many of us.  Now that you have a hint of what to look for in foods, be armed and vigilant as you shop and make choices in restaurants.  Remember that diet, exercise and wise supplementation are the keys to Wellness!  Stay well!

Preparing for a Long Drive

Well, conference is coming up soon and I have been thinking about that long drive.  While I love to travel, driving can be tiring at times, especially in this late summer heat.  This particular journey is going to be confined to Interstate travel, so the scenery will not be as “scenic” as my camera would like.  Friends and colleagues are coming with me on this journey, sharing the driving responsibilities as well as the gas money!  Map reading will be at a minimum.

This could be a car from Shaklee!

Making a car trip  takes planning for me.  I don’t like to eat fast food as I travel for several reasons.  One main reason is the price for fast food when close to an Interstate Hwy is usually higher than when the same food is in a neighborhood.  Plus, the fat content and carbohydrate levels are usually high also.  Driving does not use that much energy, compared to the number ingested with hamburgers, fries and cokes.  Oh how I love good french fries! Yummy.  But not healthy.

Now I have to plan my snacks and meals along the way so I can stay energized and ready for conference when I arrive.  I am making my list already, planning my shopping trip, and wishing the car was larger!  For this trip, which we will do in 2 days of 7 or so hours of driving, I am taking some of my favorite Shaklee Cinch Products, popcorn (watch the salt), apples, Get Clean Water pitcher for fresh water on the road, green tea bags and Cinch Tea Packets, and some cookies.

Be Healthy

The Cinch Lemon-Cranberry Snack Bars are my favorites!  Along with the Peanut Butter Snack Bars, I will have a good balance of protein and carbohydrates since the bars are low glycemic. They make a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack anytime, but are really good for travels.  On airplanes they really fill that hungry spot!

Since I travel with the Get Clean Water Pitcher, I have fresh filtered water when I am thirsty.  Adding Cinch Tea or a green tea bag to my water bottle adds some good anti-oxidants as well as flavor to my water.  Staying hydrated while traveling is important.  When you become dehydrated, your brain is effected.  The one thing you need to have working well while driving is your brain!  Make good decisions while on the road.

Get Clean Water

Get Clean Water

I keep a cooler in the front seat with sliced apples, peanut butter and extra ice for my tea.  Having the cool apple slices and the peanut butter gives me a good snack with fiber, flavor and crunch.   When I stop along the way I take a few minutes in the rest area to spread some of the peanut butter on the ends of a few of the apple slices for a quick snack.  Keeping the fuel and water coming in, keeps me awake and ready to drive safely.  When flying, I do something similar, but don’t have the cooler.

Some of the traveling I do is lengthy. Using the Cinch Shakes along those long journeys really keeps me fueled and focused.  Cinch Shakes are filled with good protein, vitamins, minerals and flavor.  I use the Cinch Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry Shakes.  When traveling in a car you can use the canisters.  But for airplanes, I find the packets work best.  One packet per meal and you are done!  Makes the luggage lighter as you continue on your journey.

So when you get ready for your next trip, whether it is across town or across country, take a few minutes to plan your meals, take some healthy snacks, water bottles with your filtered Get Clean Water and have fun in this beautiful country!  Fuel for you is as important as fuel for the car!  Stay well.
