Preparing for Holiday Stress and Weight Gain

Southern FallIt’s that time of year again.  Fall means that the Holiday season is not far off.  And that means Stress and Weight Gain are lurking, waiting to pounce again this year.  Stress can elevate your body’s levels of cortisol, and continuously high levels have been linked to long-term health impacts.

Well this year can be different!  You have the power to nip all the stress and weight gain possibilities in the bud, way before they poke their ugly heads into your days.  How can this be so, you ask?  Taking steps now, before the start of the craziness will make all the difference when the time comes.  Small steps over time make big differences.

Start by making lists of presents to purchase.  Be realistic in how much to spend, don’t go over your budget.  Stress from large credit card bills is no fun in the new year.  Find ways to give your time, your presence rather than presents.  Much more fulfilling and easier on the budget.  And usually a lot of fun as well.

Decide which parties and family events you can attend and so NO to the rest.  Keep the list small and doable so you can actually enjoy your time togetheChristmasr.  Running, tired, stressed and irritated do not make for fun party guests.  NO is a wonderful word to use when your schedule is booked to the max!  USE IT!  Say NO! and then breathe deeply.  The world will continue to spin even if you don’t make it to all the events of the season.  You will, however, appreciate and savor the ones you do attend.

Keep the decorating to minimum this year.  Pick a few favorites and display them.  Add holiday music, a selection of your favorites to set the mood each day.  Put lights on timers so you are not running around turning on trees, window displays, outside lights.  Keep it Simple!  Personally, I like replacing the throws, pillows and area rugs with holiday themed items along with those battery operated candles that flicker like real candles.  High impact visually, low impact physically.

Keeping stress lower makes for less stress eating and less weight gain.  Preparing ahead of time for attending a party will help with 15-412_180MealInfographicthe mindless snacking that can occur at parties.  I eat one of my Shaklee 180 Meal-in-a-Bars or Snack Bars before each party to help with the empty calorie munching that I am prone to indulge.  Keeping my protein intake high, as well as the full feeling I get with the fiber in the bars and shakes,  lets me enjoy a dessert item or two without guilt.  Holidays mean treats to me, so keeping those treats at a manageable limit is desirable.  And I have found that I truly enjoy the treat if it is carefully chosen, savored and admired, rather than stuffed in my mouth out of hunger!

When all else fails, and the stress level begins to rise, reach for Shaklee Stress Relief Complex!    Stress Relief Complex contains a blend of clinically tested ingredients and has been designed to support a calm, more relaxed state without causing drowsiness.  Stress can elevate your body’s levels of cortisol, and continuously high levels have been linked to long-term health impacts. Stress Relief Complex was designed to help support your body’s response to stress.

Sabotage

Sabotage.  One of my favorite movies from Alfred Hitchcock in the 1930’s.  But Sabotage is not something I want to do to my self.  Yet, many do just that.  How you might ask?

Sabotage is “the act of destroying or damaging something deliberately so that it does not work correctly” according to Merriam-Webster dictionary.   It is sometimes thought of as a sneaky attack by an enemy, but often Sabotage is closer to home.  Closer than you might expect, just look in the mirror!

IMG_2624 webYou know what I am talking about.  You know that weight loss plan you decided on back at the end of last year, or was it the exercise plan you were “committed” to at the first of the year.  Remember?  You had plans, you had a goal, you had dreams….. once upon a new year.  But somewhere along the way, the Sabotage started and your plans were derailed.

What happened to derail such commitment?  What kind of Sabotage did you encounter?  Was it from your friends and family?  Did they invite you to dinner and offer your fattening favorites?  Did you feel you had to eat more than you had planned out of guilt?  They had cooked your favorites after all!Cake & Berries 3 4 x 3 72

Or was it boredom on your part?  Did you Sabotage yourself by mindlessly eating a bag of potato chips while watching some mindless TV program?  Did you see your favorite goodie at the grocery store and could not resit bring it home, telling yourself all along that you could control the portions each day?  Was that you?  Did you then proceed to eat the whole thing?  Then felt guilty about that?

Or was that Sabotage from your own body?  Your own body!  Well, studies have shown that when we get hunger pangs after we have eaten a reasonable meal we are often THIRSTY!  Somehow the signals get mixed up and we end up eating a fattening snack mid-morning or mid-afternoon when we should have a nice glass of water!

Water BottlesImagine that.  We need to drink more water.  Simple, clean, filtered, pure water.  H2O.  Plain and simple.  Water.  From an article I wrote several years ago, “We need to remember that your body is about 60% water, you brain is about 75% water and your blood is about 82% water!”

The article goes on to explain:  “The main thing to remember is that we need to stay hydrated each day, even in the winter.  Turns out our body relies on water to help keep our temperature regulated.  So to stay warm in the winter, drink water.”   Seems every part of our body needs water as much as our diet and exercise program!

So stop the Sabotage and drink water daily.  I use a Get Clean Water Pitcher from Shaklee to provide good, lead-free water.  I mix in some Shaklee 180 Energizing Tea for a bit of flavor and refreshing energy boost.   Stay well!

Weight Loss Tips for 2012

So how are you doing with your 2012 Resolutions?  Had any results yet?  Started yet?  I know.  It is hard to get started on some of these crazy diets that float around this time of year!  Changing habits is hard.  We all like doing the same things since that gives us a sense of security and continuity in our lives.  Control too if we will admit it.

Take Those Measurements

However, if your goal is to loose some of those unwanted pounds, there are some things you can do to make the new habits easier.  First of all, weight and measure yourself so you have a base measurement for future comparison.  Take a photo of yourself in comfortable clothing, like a T-shirt and gym pants.  Between the measurements and the photo, you will have a good baseline.

Now, habits take a while to change.  So make only a few changes in your diet and exercise at first.  Making only a few changes will help you achieve results quicker.  Focusing on only a few changes is easier and you don’t feel out of control.  Make a short list, create a chart of those few changes and note your progress each day.

Easy Changes that Work:

1.  Add Filtered Water each day.  I have talked so much about how our bodies need quantities of filtered water so check out some of my previous posts.  I drink about 10 to 12 cups of water each day.  My skin is healthy, my body feels good and I get rid of toxins.

2.  Add Exercise each day.  Park further from the door of work or at the grocery store.  Take the stairs up a few flights instead of the elevator.  Walk the dog or the neighbor’s dog each day.   A brisk walk around your neighborhood, just move.  On really hot or really cold days, I walk in my house, listening to a learning CD, but moving for at least 45 minutes.

3.  Add Protein while cutting Carbohydrates.  I use Shaklee’s Cinch Snack bars which give me a low glycemic option each day.  They are crunchy, filling because of the fiber and have the right balance of protein to carbohydrates.  You need carbs to burn fat!  So don’t completely cut out the carbs.  But having too many carbs is bad.  So watch the balance.  Add the good Shaklee Cinch protein, clinically proven to work.

4.  Add Fiber to your diet in the form of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables.  Avoid grapes and tomatoes as they have high sugar and low fiber.  Crunchy goodness like apples give you fiber, good carbs and vitamins.

5.  Take your Measurements and weigh once a week.  If you are loosing fat and not muscle mass, the inches will drop more than the pounds at first.  Muscle mass weighs more than fat!  And building up muscle mass is important to maintaining a healthy weight.

Make slow changes, be consistent and watch that extra weight gently fall off and stay off.  Stopping the YoYo diet cycle is crucial to keeping the weight off. Cinch was created to stop the YoYo diet cycle.  For more information on Cinch, look at this siteStay well and healthy in the new year!

How does Shaklee’s Performance Perform?

Shaklee’s Performance Hydration drink has long been used by elite athletes to help with their performances during training and competition. According to Dr Stephen Chaney, dehydration is the Number 1 problem in vigorous exercise and endurance activities.  Studies show that a body can lose 5 to 6 cups of fluid while exercising in less than half an hour.  That amount of fluid loss can lead to poor performance and even physical ailments.

Drinking water alone will not replace the electrolytes, protein and carbohydrates needed to keep an elite athlete at the prime.   Keeping your energy at maximum output during competition is the goal of all athletes whether an elite Olympic competitor or the weekend golfer.

Shaklee Performance® is clinically proven to hydrate better than water. Plus, Performance has more electrolytes and provides more energy than the leading hydration drink. Our proprietary OPTI-LYTE™ electrolyte blend plus our unique mix of carbohydrates delivers instant and sustained energy and supports optimal hydration.  Performance is part of a Trio of Sports Nutrition Products:
Clinically Proven
Minimizes fluid loss for enhanced hydration
Maintains blood-glucose levels to sustain intense energy output and to increase stamina
Increases endurance for better athletic performance
No artificial flavors, sweeteners or added preservatives.

In a study published in the Journal of Urological Research in 2009,  Shaklee’s Performance was tested against Gatorade.  It was a study independent of the Shaklee Corporation.  The conclusion states:  “Ingestion of Performance, but not Gatorade, led to an increase in mean urinary citrate excretion and pH as compared to water. The increase in citrate is likely to be a clinically significant effect. pH is an important determinant of alkali load in beverages containing organic anions. Performance, with more citrate and a higher pH than Gatorade, could represent a superior alternative to water for reducing urinary lithogenicity.”   The researchers concluded that Shaklee’s Performance was superior to either Gatorade or water alone at deceasing the risk of Kidney Stone Formation.

Now that is important to me since many of my family members and friends as well suffer from Kidney Stones!  So if keeping hydrated by using Shaklee’s Performance has an extra benefit, then so much the better!  Shaklee’s Performance does perform well and out-performs Gatorade and other sports drinks.  You will enjoy the two options, Lemon-Lime or Orange.  Both mix well with water and I sometimes add a packet of Cinch Tea.  Yummy!  Enjoy and stay well.

Sick & Tired of Being Sick & Tired?

Recently my daughter and her husband went to a Halloween costume event at their workplace.  They went as “Sick & Tired”.  Daughter dressed in comfortable pj’s and carried a stuffed animal, and son-in-law put a light green tinted make-up on his face, darkening the circles under his eyes and  such.  They were quite the pair!

But they got me to thinking about all the people who complain about being “Sick & Tired”.  Folks everywhere complain about not enough sleep, sinus problems, allergies, stomach upsets,  colon problems, asthma and more.  Then the question arises as to what they are doing to combat all these ailments?  Do they even know what is causing all these problems?  Do they know that there are good natural solutions for most of these ailments?

Recent reports from Doctors and Public Health Experts have said that up to 75% of the heart disease, diabetes, strokes and arthritis, cancer and obesity are preventable! 75% PREVENTABLE. So to prevent a disease we have to take control of and responsibility for our own health.  So we can stop be “Sick & Tired”.

Taking responsibility and control of our own health means we exercise regularly, use wise supplementation and watch our diet.  Eating organic fruits and vegetables, walking or working out regularly and using natural supplements to fill in the deficits of our diet due to the loss of nutritional value because of the way our foods are produced.

Be Healthy

The good news is that small positive changes in our weight (weight loss) can give us huge benefits.  As we loose weight, we have increased mobility which makes exercise easier.  We have lower blood pressure since there is less area for blood to move through making less work for the heart.  We tend to have lower cholesterol since we are eating more fruits and vegetables and less fast food.  We have an increase in energy, our mood is better and our self esteem rises.  Our blood sugar lowers and and we reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

You deserve the best don’t you?  Why not take control of your health and do something good for your self!  Eat an organic diet, exercise regularly and use wise supplementation Health is your choice, make is a good one!

Simple Changes Make a Big Difference

Life today is a risky business when it comes to drinking water and food.  As a person who believes in and takes natural supplements, I am always amused when people tell me that they will not take anything that their doctor has not prescribed.  Little do they know about all the chemicals (most untested for human toxicity) and drugs that lurk in our food, water and air.  We are “taking” things not prescribed by doctors all the time just by drinking water and eating our food and don’t even think a thing about it.

There have been dramatic changes in the our food supply as well as our eating habits that are causing equally dramatic changes in our health.  While we are using more pesticides and herbicides along with genetic manipulation of crops, the nutritional of our food has decreased since the 1950’s. Crops are picked before they are ripe, lowering the nutritional potential of the fruits and vegetables.

Our drinking water is the source a myriad of chemicals including prescription drugs, industrial pollutants, agricultural runoff  and fertilizers.   Now 20% of the lead exposure we get on a daily basis, including bottled water.   Using filtered water is sensible and a healthier way to get the much needed hydration we need daily.

Get Clean Water

Get Clean Water

So think carefully the next time you turn your nose up at the idea of taking a natural supplement, remember all the chemicals you are “taking” because of poor quality drinking water  and our food sources.  Do something good for yourself.  Make some simple changes in your food, water and supplementation to have a healthier life.

Use  filtered water such as from Get Clean Water from Shaklee since it filters 99% of the lead from water along with many agricultural and industrial pollutants.  Purchase organic foods from local growers.  Talk with the grower if possible to establish how they grow their crops, what pest control methods they choose and how they handle the food once it is picked.  Avoid processed and fast foods because of preservatives, fat content and sodium levels.

Increase your exercise each day, walk or jog in your neighborhood, use the Wii Fit program at home, go to a gym or local fitness center or take classes in dance.  Eat well and use good natural supplements.  I always recommend Shaklee supplements since they are known for being safe and contaminate free.   In my “Supplements to Avoid” post on August 22nd, I sited Dr Jamie McManus explaining why Shaklee supplements are safe.

Simple Changes Make a Big Difference every day of your life.  When you change the way you look at things the things you look at change!  Eat good healthy food, exercise daily, drink filtered drinking water, and supplement wisely! Stay Healthy!! Elise

Glaciers, Icefields and Rainforest Views

Images of blue, white and black ice drifting over blue gray water are the memories from the Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau Alaska.  Part of the Juneau Icefields, in the Coast Mountain RanMendenhall Bergs 4x6 100 crge, North America’s fifth largest icefield blankets over 1,500 square miles of land.     About 85 miles north to south and 45 miles east to west, the Juneau Icefield feeds 38 large glaciers.  Interestingly, the ice can be from 800 feet to 4, 500 feet deep!  No wonder it was so cold at the Mendenhall Glacier Park.

Some of the Glaciers in the Juneau Ice Field are retreating while others are stable or advancing.  Even in retreat, the glaciers will be evident for several centuries.  The rock that is revealed when the glaciers retreat, begin to support life quickly.  The first plant life that forms on the bare rocks are moss and lichens.  Lupine, Alder, Cottonwoods and willows followed by SpView from the Top in Rain 4x6 100cr copyruce and Hemlock eventually create the forest we see furthest from the face of the Glaciers.  This reclamation process takes about 350 years!

So as you visit the Temperate Rainforest of Southeast Alaska, appreciate the time it has taken to even being to see tall trees in the area.  Also appreciate how quickly a logging crew can destroy this delicate environment.  Protection is necessary since this environment is the home  to fragile wildlife along with being part of the climate stabilizers of the world.  Visit the Alaska Wilderness League for more information.

Persistence & Pals: A Winning Combination in Rainforests & Life

While I was touring the Temperate Rainforest that surrounds Juneau Alaska, I was learning from a Tlingit Guide about the Rain Forest and the special relationships that exists in the Rain Forest.  The Tongass National Forest lies within the heart of the temperate Rain Forest of  Southern Alaska.

The area is very rocky and the soil is shallow because of the rocks.  The trees that grow there have to be persistent to grow so tall in such harsh conditions.  The rocks make the trees produce shallow root systems that spread out and intertwine with neighboring trees.  This intertwining of root systems provides a layer of protection for the trees as they depend on each other when the winds get high.

Persistence & Pals in Tongass National Forest by Elise Hearn 2009

This idea of persistence and Pals made me think of how we live our lives and do business each day.  We often have “shallow roots” and need the help of our Pals to survive the perils of high winds of life.  We are much like the temperate rainforest, we need each other to be able to flourish in this world.  We have to depend on keeping our Pals close by, for by ourselves, we will not stand up in the face of the first strong blow!

Unfortunately, this beautiful temperate Rainforest, The Tongass National Forest is being threatened again by logging.  The rain forests of the world contain old growth timbers that cannot be replaced.  “Since the 1950’s nearly 70 percent of the ancient hemlock stands have been roaded and logged. The rampant destruction has come at a great ecological cost to the Tongass and at a great financial cost to American taxpayers.”  says the Alaska Chapter of the Sierra Club.

The wood they provide is not needed for building.  It is desired for show, the wood from these irreplaceable old growth trees is not really needed to build homes.  Instead this wood goes for show! Vanity would have us cut down and destroy the very lungs of the earth, while having a fancy home thousands of miles away in a foreign country look “fabulous”!  Not acceptable.  Please help the Alaska Wildlife League, Alaska Sierra Club, Alaska Audubon and others.

We must let this administration know that we value this temperate Rainforest and want to save this precious resource.  We cannot replace this forest.  It is the home to Bald Eagles, Moose, Elk, and more.  This habitat once cut, leaves little for the wild life and often ruins the creeks that flow through them causing problems for the salmon trying to return home each fall. To stop this cutting of the temperate Rain Forest with taxpayer dollars no less!, contact the White House and President Obama.  Thanks for protecting the Rain Forests!

HRH The Prince of Wales’ Rainforests Project

Interesting video from HRH The Prince of Wales. The Prince of Wales is talking about saving the rainforests of the world. In his words, there is more C02 released from the cutting of the rainforests than all the transportation in the world(boats, cars, trains, planes, etc!)! This puts a new twist on C02 emissions now, doesn’t it!

Visit The Prince’s Rainforests Project for more information.

Shaklee’s Earth Day Planting of One Millionth Tree

Shaklee Corporation’s CEO Roger Barnett, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Dr Wangari Maathai from Kenya, planted Shaklee’s One Millionth Tree today at Shaklee Corp. Headquarters in Pleasanton CA. Shaklee’s One Million Trees, One Million Dreams program has planted enough trees to fill Disneyland 18 times, stated Governor Schwarzenegger.  Think of all the people who participated in this program, the lives that have been affected by this program in the past 3 years.   Governor Schwarzenegger had praise for Shaklee Natural Supplements since he has known the value of Shaklee Supplements, vitamins, minerals and protein from his body building days!

Roger Barnett stated that in using Shaklee’s Green Eco Friendly super concentratedget-clean-products-1-5-x3-5-72dpi-copy cleaners, we have saved enough plastic bottles from going to the landfills to go around the earth more 19 times in the past 3 years alone.  Shaklee has been green since it was started in 1956 by Dr. Forrest Shaklee.  Shaklee is about make people and planet healthier.  Shaklee is the first company in the world to be Certified Climate Neutral by totally offsetting its carbon footprint.

“You can flourish and do well by doing good at the same time”, according to Roger Barnett.  He announced a new campaign to provide an economic opportunity for One Million Americans to become Eco-Entrepreneurs with Shaklee.  Shaklee is waiving the entire cost of joining Shaklee for the next 30 days(till mid-May 2009) to help create an income opportunity for One Million People this year, said Barnett.  So you can start a Green Business by sharing green and natural and healthy products with friends and family.  Dr Shaklee once said that Shaklee might be the last opportunity for the little person to build a business without a lot of money.

Dr. Maatha
i has been instrumental planting 30 million trees in her home country of Kenya to deal with the de-forestation of the countryside.  Her plan not only re-plants much needed trees it also employs women in need of jobs!   Dr. Maathai is working with the UN to plant One Billion Trees in the world!  She suggests that each individual plant 10(ten) trees in their lifetime.  So if you have not planted a tree, now is the time to get started.  Dr. Maathai was awarded Shaklee’s First Eco-Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009.
