I’m In for 10!

January is traditionally the month to start a new weight loss program.  We all over-ate during the holidays.  You know the drill, Halloween candy and Fall Festivals start the slide to over-eating and it continues IMG_2624 webthrough November with Thanksgiving with all that pie, stuffing, dressing, candied-who-knows-what and gravy over everything!  December is filled with every excuse in the book to have a get together.  From those office parties, charity events, family reunions, weddings, anniversary parties, graduations, Chanukah,  Christmas and so on, food is the center of our attention for about 3 months.  And does it ever show by New Year’s Day.  Sigh….

So here we are again, looking at that same 10 pounds we looked at last year, sitting on our butts and bellies.  Our clothes are tight, we feel sluggish and the TV is loaded with commercials for every sort of weight loss miracle. ” Just do this for 10 minutes a day and you will look like some thin, over-developed blonde in a smaller than need swim suit.”   Not going to happen, but we can delude ourselves that there is really a magic, miracle pill that will make all this extra fat go away with no effort.

Benefits of Weight Loss     There are many reasons to get rid of those pounds. Some are pure vanity, we want to look our best.  Spring Break is coming soon and the beaches of FL need our slim bodies to soak up some sun for a week.  Our heart would appreciate not having to support such a large mass of fat, so our blood pressure would drop.  Our cholesterol would improve, the risk of diabetes would lower and we would sleep better.  None of those is bad!  The long term benefits of weight loss has been studied by many, even the CDC published studies showing the positive effect of weight loss on chronic diseases.  I don’t like to be ill, how about you?

Well this year I am taking charge early to rid myself of those extra pounds and maybe a few more of their friends by ImInfor10_button_3x3_600participating in Shaklee’s I’m in for 10!  Challenge”.    The goal is for the company to set a record by losing 40,000 in 3 months.  So Shaklee is inviting folks like me and you to sign-up, get moving, get motivated, plug into their program this 1st Quarter and together we can get rid of those pesky pounds.  For more information visit my personal Shaklee siteJoin me as part of my team to lose the weight and let’s set the record!  Elise  Elise@EliseHearn.com

Start 2015 with New Goals

Start 2015 with New Goals for a New Year!  Resolutions are made and quickly broken, forgotten.  Change is never something we embrace easily as humans.  But change can be healthy for us and make us have a better quality of life.  Long life is not good if the last years are spent in hospitals or nursing homes with ill health.  Besides being expensive, illness is no way to live your life.  We are made to be healthy, but we often do things that are bad for our health.

Smoking, over eating, keeping stress levels too high, not getting proper rest, not getting proper exercise, not eating good food, eating junk food, drinking too much soda and alcohol, and so much more.  We forget we are not bullet-proof!

2015-Kickoff-Social-4Let’s make 2015 the year we make changes toward better health, toward a healthier lifestyle, toward more exercise, toward happiness not stress.  Change comes slowly over the course of time.  Make a list of a few things you want to accomplish in 2015.  Maybe it is losing 10 pounds.  Maybe it is to stop smoking.  Maybe it is to take up a sport.  Make the list.

Now decide what you need to do to get to that 1st small goal.  Is it to modify your exercise, your eating habits or smoking habits?  Make small changes over the course of a few months.  These small changes will allow you to have success as you are making progress towards your larger goal.  Deciding to lose 100 pounds is a big change, but 10 pounds can happen in a few weeks or a month.  Small successes added together equal big change over time!

Visit my Shaklee site for help with weight loss, stress management, better sleep, and sports nutrition products to aid in that new sport you are excited about trying.  Get out of your rut, take charge of your present so your future can be the one you deserve!

Alternative to Juicing, Easy & Simple

vegetables natural_smallIn December, I had a fun get-together with a former co-worker.  Adrienne and I decided to meet at the beach for a much needed restful weekend.  Adrienne wanted to share with me her new juicing machine and how she was enjoying the juicing experience.

When we got to the resort, her car was filled with this huge juicing machine, a large cooler with organic fruits & vegetables, cutting boards, colander and knife. We lugged all this stuff up to our room which fortunately had a small kitchen area with a good size refrigerator.

Adrienne was excited to show me how she was making her shakes each morning.  She began cleaning and chopping fruits & veggies, adding protein powder and soy milk.  The small kitchen was a mess from preparing all the different items, then all the washing-up and drying of the machine and other tools.

As I was watching her make this shake, I was asking questions about why she was wanting to add juicing to her routine.  Adrienne said she was interested in adding more anti-oxidants to her diet, more fiber along with readily available vitamins & minerals. Made sense, but the process was too involved for me, and really for Adrienne too since she was a bit overwhelmed with the whole lengthy process.

Wanting to help Adrienne achieve her goals easier, we explored some of the Shaklee products that I use daily.  To get all the vitamins and minerals she was wanting I suggested using Shaklee’s Vitalizer, Vitalizer Gold for her since she is over 50 yrs old.  Vitalizer is the most advanced multinutrient supplement in the marketplace today with 80 bio-optimized nutrients clinically proven to create a foundation for a longer, healthier life.* Vitalizer is the powerful and convenient approach to complete supplementation providing the best spectrum of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-aging phytonutrients, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics*, all in one daily serving.
Custom formula created specifically for today’s healthy active adultVitalizer from Shaklee
Patent-pending delivery system designed to enhance absorption of key nutrients
Based on 12 clinical studies and a first-of-its-kind Landmark Study.

So Vitalizer met her needs for antioxidants, vitamins & minerals that were readily available and easily absorbed, plus added omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics.

Now to meet her need for protein and even more fruit, I had her use Shaklee 180 Smoothees.  She liked the Vanilla Smoothee since she can add apples with cinnamon for an apple pie flavor or add oranges for an “Orange Julius” taste. Make them to your taste for the season you are in. Great protein, easily absorbed, with the right kinds of fiber for healthy digestion.  Perfect!

Vanilla Shaklee 180Smoothee_b2124224 grams of hunger fighting protein when Mixed in 1 cup of nonfat milk or light soymilk

Now her days are filled with good protein, easily absorbed vitamins and more free time! Shaklee 180 Smoothees, fresh fruit and Shaklee Vitalizer fill the bill! Wow, “juicing” is now simple and easy for Adrienne and others who want to have a healthy start to the day without all the mess and bother.  For more information on Shaklee products mentioned here, visit my Shaklee website  Elise.MyShaklee.com    Stay well, Elise

Throw away that Heart Shaped Box!

It is that time of year when we are accosted with ads for candy, diamonds and more candy.  This year is the year to throw away that Heart Shaped Box and do something Out of the Box!pictures_of_hearts

Now what could that be, you might be asking yourself since you were wanting to have a few choice pieces from that heart shaped box.  Well, thinking of new and fun things to do just takes a few minutes of looking around your local area to see what opportunities await your senses.

Look for a cooking class, something fun that you two can do together.  Cooking a fun, different meal together can lead to a whole new side to your relationship.   Who knows what talents you both might have when working together in the kitchen.  Experiment with different spices, different vegetables, different recipes.  Have fun and laugh.  This could be the start of many new traditions.

Volunteer in your area or the surrounding areas.  There have been so many storms IMG_3620 Old Barn 150dpi 5x7and fires this past year that many people are still struggling with repairs to homes and businesses.  Reach out to one of the local churches or Habitat for Humanity for their volunteer programs.  You may have talents in building or painting that would be of help, or you could partner with others to move much needed supplies to a stricken area.  Bringing a hot cup of coffee and a hot meal to those working to repair their lives can make a big difference in the day of a survivor.  And the benefits to yourself are immense

Plan a day trip to one of the local “tourist sites” that most locals never visit.  Many people live in a town with a wonderful museum, park, factory or historic site that they have never visited.  So “play tourist” for a day and visit something local.  Tour that dairy farm outside of town that makes that wonderful cheese you both love.  Wineries and Vineyards are popular tours, look for a new wine to share with that meal you cooked from your cooking class!  Our area is full of Revolutionary and Civil War battle grounds, so if you are a history enthusiast, visit your local historic sites.  Have fun doing something out of the ordinary!

Get creative, have fun, plan the budget so you don’t get in trouble with the costs, laugh as you explore new things together!  Elise

NSAIDs and Hearing Loss in Women

Well, if it isn’t enough that NSAIDs cause enough problems as it was, now there are studies showing NASIDs are responsible for hearing loss in women!  From an article written earlier this month, I found that NSAIDs can cause many serious problems which include: • heart attack • stroke • high blood pressure • heart failure from body swelling (fluid retention) • kidney problems including kidney failure • bleeding and ulcers in the stomach and intestine • life-threatening allergic reactions and more. All this for an anti-inflammatory! Yuck.

Now in a study published on September 15, 2012 in the American Journal of Epidemiology,  “In this study, use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen (but not aspirin) 2 or more days per week was associated with an increased risk of hearing loss in women.”  It has already been established that “Use of analgesics is common and is associated with increased risk of hearing loss in men.”

From the Harvard Gazette:  “More than 50 percent of American adults suffer from high-frequency hearing loss by the time they reach 60 years old. One-third of women in their 50s and nearly two-thirds in their 60s have experienced hearing loss. According to the World Health Organization, adult-onset hearing loss is the sixth most common disease burden in high-income countries.”

Use this safe link to find Alternatives to NSAIDs that work without causing hearing loss, stomach issues, heart problem and more.  Anti-inflammatory options work well and the side effect is better health!

Chronic Inflammation and CVD

I have been interested in Inflammation and its effects on the body for some time now.  Having dealt with arthritis and sinus problems in the past, I am always looking for ways to eliminate or blunt inflammation.  Not wanting to deal with heart problems, CVD, Alzheimer’s Disease, arthritis, cancer and diabetes to name a few chronic inflammation related issues, I am always on the search for new information.  “Research has established that high levels of inflammation are strongly predictive of heart disease, and that lowering inflammation can prevent heart attacks and other cardiovascular events,” says Alexander J. Szalai, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB). Szalai has spent 20 years studying the biology of one of the most hotly debated subjects in heart disease: C-reactive protein (CRP).

For the past 30 years or more, statins have been the go-to drug of choice for most physicians when CVD is found.  Lowering “bad” cholesterol, LDL,  with the use of statin drugs has turned into a big business.  It is estimated that 24 Million Americans take statin drugs each year.  And yet,  CVD is now the nation’s #1 Killer!

“It’s well-established that statins can lower the risk of [CVD],” says Robert Rountree, MD, holistic physician and Delicious Living’s medical editor. He continues with new research that “indicates the primary mechanism by which statins lower risk is not by reducing LDL cholesterol but instead by decreasing systemic inflammation.”  Reducing Inflammation.  Wow, I have been on that band-wagon for a while now. This is exciting news to me and I had to share it with you.

Fortunately there are many natural ways to reduce systemic or chronic inflammation besides statin

drugs. As you know, I don’t particularly like prescription drug side effects. Now, don’t get all up in arms, there are good reasons to take a prescription drug. However, when prescription drugs have more negative side effects than the original problem, I am not a fan! So when I read about new research that is showing that natural alternatives to statin drugs were working well and getting traction in the medical community, I was excited.   Dr Houston says of stains:  “And although statins are considered safe drugs, their use can have downsides. Potential adverse effects include muscle weakness and breakdown, liver dysfunction, and possible links to memory loss and nerve damage.”

Of course, you don’t want to give up the statins without help and advice of your physician.  But, if you are willing to make the diet, exercise and supplement modifications, over the course of time you may be able to say good-bye to the statins and hello to better health, naturally.

To follow a healthy lifestyle, follow this tips and ask for help from a functional physician.

Exercise is a must for help with cardiovascular issues.  Walk each day, stretch, join a gym or fitness center to have supervised assistance with your exercise program.  But move you must!

Increase your Omega 3’s.  Eat more Omega-3 rich foods.  Research shows EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish such as salmon, and sardines, reduce triglycerides. They also lower inflammation; scientists believe they counteract the effects of inflammatory substances and cells in the body.  Add in a high quality Omega-3 supplement each day.

Avoid simple carbohydrates and sugar.  Again research has found that eating high-glycemic foods such as potatoes, sugar, white rice and white bread increases the risk of CVD.  Eat around the edges of the grocery store, avoiding processed foods and empty calories.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are your friends!

Add anti-inflammatory supplements such as Resveratrol, Alfalfa Complex, CoQ10, Vitamin D3, Vitamin C and others.  Move towards a more alkaline body, away from acidic and enjoy a healthier life!

Good health is a choice.  What choice will you make today?

Fueling Options for Sports Events

Before, during and after events, be sure to hydrate with cool liquids in small amounts, early and often.  According to Les Wong, Shaklee’s VP of Health Sciences, Shaklee Corporation, Shaklee has been working with Elite Athletes for over 30 years.  Shaklee Powered Athletes have won over 100 medals in the Winter and Summer Olympic games along with many other elite athletic competitions.  Sports drinks like Shaklee Performance can be especially helpful but should first be tested in training before use in competition.
Pre-Event:  Nutritious foods including sandwiches, salads, fruits, and Shaklee Cinch Meal Bars or Snack Bars are best consumed 2 – 4 Hours before exercise.  More rapidly absorbed Nutritional Shakes including Cinch Shakes or Meal Shakes may be consumed as little as 1 Hour before a event depending on an individual’s digestive comfort.  Continue hydration right up to the start of training or competition  (Energy Chews may be considered an energy boost 15-30 minutes prior to competition.)

During:  Continue hydration every 15 – 30 minutes, depending on conditions. For events lasting more than an hour, nutrition bars, gels and rapidly digested carbohydrate rich foods, including fruits like bananas, apples and bagels, may be consumed in addition to fluids.

Post Event:  Protein, carbohydrate, and fluids should be consumed immediately after exercise to maximize muscle energy refueling, muscle repair and ,muscle rebuilding.  Physique is proven to trigger the body’s anabolic state and enhance the body’s recovery process in response to exercise.  Continue to hydrate post-exercise and consume additional Physique (or other foods) an hour or two after exercise, especially if you have daily or multiple workout sessions.

Targeted Solutions to Aging

Aging.  Well, we are all aging if we are over 18 years old or so!  Some of us age more “gracefully” than others.  Gracefully, meaning that we don’t physically show the signs of aging like gray hair and wrinkles as soon as others.  However, those Hollywood mandated signs of aging are only superficial.  Aging is at the cellular level and is happening everyday.

Recent research has found that anti-oxidant support can shore up your defenses against aging diseases. Oxidation and inflammation are at the heart of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, arthritis, digestive problems and every other degenerative disease.

Inflammation is not always a bad thing, like when you scratch your finger on a tack and the white blood cells jump into action with the body’s inflammatory chemicals to rush in and take care of the invasion caused by the scratch. However, these same inflammatory fighting compound also go into emergency response to gradual cell damage from free radicals.  Chronic inflammation is the results when the body does not know when to stop.

According to author Jonny Bowden, PhD, should you find that you are overweight, have diabetes or dementia, you definitely have chronic inflammation. To find a measure of inflammation, you can look at your C-Reactive protein test (CRP). The CRP test measures the liver’s response to inflammatory conditions. Even though the test is not perfect, it tells you whether you have inflammation in your body. Unfortunately it does not tell you where the inflammation is in your body.

So what supplements help with aging and anti-inflammatory responses? What can I do to age better?  Here are some supplements that help slow aging by reducing inflammation.  We are fortunate that Shaklee has Targeted Solutions for Aging!  Here are a few of my favorites supplements that I take each day to help maintain a healthy body.  I may be aging, but I am going to do everything I can to slow aging and fight against those free radicals that cause cell dShaklee's CarotoMaxamage.

Astaxanthin: a powerful and potent Carotenoid found in salmon, krill, algae and yeast and is known to scavenge free radical.  Protects against damage to LDL cholesterol, cell membranes, cells and tissues in the eyes, prostrate, cervix, lungs and heart.

Found in Shaklee’s CarotoMax

N-acetlylcysteine (NAC): A primary building block for glutathione, n-acetylcysteine helps boost immunity, detox the liver, and lessen the effects of infection and oxidative stress.

Found in Shaklee Vitalizer Gold, with and without Vitamin K, also in VitaLea Gold with & without Vitamin K

Trans-Resveratrol:  The active part of Resveratrol, this anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory compound is found in red grape skins and red wine.

* Key ingredients in Vivix have been shown in a clinical study and numerous laboratory studies to improve cell defense, cell energy, cell repair, and cell performance*
* Delivers a broad spectrum of over 15 polyphenols—including ellagitannins, one of nature’s most potent antioxidants*
* Ingredients that are 10X more powerful than resveratrol alone in slowing a key mechanism of cellular aging*
Found is Shaklee’s Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement.

Proanthocyanidins: Strong anti-oxidant that protect against oixidative stress. One of the two stong anti-oxidants found in grapes seeds and skins, (resveratrol is the other), Proanthocyanidins have been shown in clinical research to have anti-oxidant protection from oxidative damge caused by smoking, pollution and free radical damage formed in our body during normal metabolism. Studies have also show anti-cancer, anti-tumor and anti-allergic protection along with prevention of cardiovascular disease.  Proanthocyanidins are compounds that appear to have more powerful antioxidant properties than both vitamins C and E*

Found in Shaklee’s Vita-E Complex and Vivix Liquid Dietary Supplement and Shaklee’s FlavoMax Complex.

Curcumin or Tumeric: Strong anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. The National Institutes of Health has four clinical trials underway to study Curcumin, the active ingredient in Tumeric, for pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, Alzheimer’s and colorectal cancer.

Found in Shaklee’s Liver DTX Complex

Good Health is a choice we make each day.  Are you making the correct choices to have a healthier life, a longer life, a better quality of life as you age?  Don’t you deserve the best life has to offer?  My choice is prevention.  I am doing all that I can to prevent disease.  Prevention is better than disease care any day.  So make you choice and join me in prevention.  Stay well!

Sleeping Pills and Death

So you need a little more sleep, your Doctor prescribes a sleeping pill and you are a happy camper with that little pill. You ignore the groggy mornings and the fuzziness. Can you ignore the increased potential of Death?  In a recently published study from the British Medical Journal the BMJ Open Journal, evidence has been found to link the use of sleeping pills to increased death rate amoung the users.

This study was carried out in the US, led by Daniel Kripke from the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Center in La Jolla CA. It studied the population severed by the largest rural integrated healthcare system in America in Pennsylvania over a 2 1/2 year period. Researchers compared the death rates of more than 10,500 people who received sleeping pill prescriptions with those of more than 23,600 others who did not receive such sleeping medications. The groups were matched for health and other factors such as age, gender, smoking, body mass index, ethnicity, marital status, alcohol use and prior cancer.

The results found that patients prescribed any hypnotic (sleeping pill) had substantially elevated hazards of dying compared to those prescribed no hypnotics. Receiving hypnotic prescriptions was associated with greater than threefold increase hazards of death even when prescribed less than 18 pills per year. Patients taking between 18 and 132 doses or more per year had a risk of death more than 5 times those that did not take the sleeping pills.

There have been several reason put forth to explain the higher death rates, such as use of the pills hiding symptoms of disease. Sleeplessness is a sign of some diseases and is often overlooked as such. Treating the sleeplessness with sleeping pills rather than looking further into possible causes has covered up diseases that when discovered have moved to worse stages had they been discovered earlier. And there has been an association between sleeping pill use and higher cancer rates although they had not been at greater risk of cancer prior to taking the pills.

Fortunately, there are natural alternatives to sleeping pills that work.  Gentle Sleep Complex from Shaklee is a unique combination features passion flower, German chamomile, and valerian. Valerian has been used for over a thousand years because it helps maintain a calm state, promotes relaxation, and is a natural means of promoting restful sleep.

Gentle Sleep Complex:  • Used safely and tradidionally to promote restful sleep*
• Natural support for maintaining a calm state*  • Guaranteed to provide 0.8% valerenic acid per serving.  When combined with good natural nutrition, proper diet and exercise, sleep and better moods are possible.  Stay Well!
