Problems with Swallowing Capsules

Problems with Swallowing Capsules is a challenge I find in many of my clients.  They get to a certain age and seem no longer able to swallow capsules or larger tablets without pain. This affliction has people shying away from good vitamins and minerals in lieu of chewable options like babies use.  What the chewable companies don’t tell you is that, even though their products may contain a certain amount of vitamins, the saliva and digestive acids in the stomach destroy most of the vitamins before they enter Pill Man 1 75 x 1 75 300 copyyour system!  So chew all you want on those gummy like substitutes, but don’t do it for nutritional value!

After much research, I have found a few solutions that help!  One is to realize that you swallow food each day without problems, so swallowing a pill is not harder.  It seems when we look at a tablet or capsule, we think it is going to be difficult, so it is.  Our thoughts make it hard.  Decide you can swallow those supplements and it will be easier.

Another thing adults do is to take a big gulp of air as they are trying to swallow vitamins or medicine.  This gulp of air gets caught in the esophagus, causing pain and then some burping.  You don’t take big gulps of air when you eat food, so why do that when you take a vitamin?  Humans!

Some friends eat a few bits of popcorn or a little cracker as they are taking their supplements and medications.  The chewing and swallowing of food mixed with the mock chewing and swallowing of capsules aids in the success of the getting your vitamins down without problems!

Now I don’t like to take a handful of vitamins myself as some of my friends do.  I take my supplements one or two at a time with my Shaklee 180 Smoothee or a glass of water.  Put the capsules in your mouth, and gently make a chewing motion with your mouth.  Now, don’t bite the capsule, just pretend to chew.  This will signal the brain that something larger than water is about to be swallowed and the throat will naturally open wider.  After a few mock chews, swallow the capsule or tablet.  If you need to add a little water, you can do that when you put the capsule in your mouth.  But not too much!

And don’t gulp air.  Air in the wrong place hurts!  It is not the capsule hurting, it is the air trying to escape that hurts.  And you did it to yourself.Vitalizer New Stacked Boxes 2011 3 x 5 100 copy

Alternative to Juicing, Easy & Simple

vegetables natural_smallIn December, I had a fun get-together with a former co-worker.  Adrienne and I decided to meet at the beach for a much needed restful weekend.  Adrienne wanted to share with me her new juicing machine and how she was enjoying the juicing experience.

When we got to the resort, her car was filled with this huge juicing machine, a large cooler with organic fruits & vegetables, cutting boards, colander and knife. We lugged all this stuff up to our room which fortunately had a small kitchen area with a good size refrigerator.

Adrienne was excited to show me how she was making her shakes each morning.  She began cleaning and chopping fruits & veggies, adding protein powder and soy milk.  The small kitchen was a mess from preparing all the different items, then all the washing-up and drying of the machine and other tools.

As I was watching her make this shake, I was asking questions about why she was wanting to add juicing to her routine.  Adrienne said she was interested in adding more anti-oxidants to her diet, more fiber along with readily available vitamins & minerals. Made sense, but the process was too involved for me, and really for Adrienne too since she was a bit overwhelmed with the whole lengthy process.

Wanting to help Adrienne achieve her goals easier, we explored some of the Shaklee products that I use daily.  To get all the vitamins and minerals she was wanting I suggested using Shaklee’s Vitalizer, Vitalizer Gold for her since she is over 50 yrs old.  Vitalizer is the most advanced multinutrient supplement in the marketplace today with 80 bio-optimized nutrients clinically proven to create a foundation for a longer, healthier life.* Vitalizer is the powerful and convenient approach to complete supplementation providing the best spectrum of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-aging phytonutrients, omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics*, all in one daily serving.
Custom formula created specifically for today’s healthy active adultVitalizer from Shaklee
Patent-pending delivery system designed to enhance absorption of key nutrients
Based on 12 clinical studies and a first-of-its-kind Landmark Study.

So Vitalizer met her needs for antioxidants, vitamins & minerals that were readily available and easily absorbed, plus added omega-3 fatty acids and probiotics.

Now to meet her need for protein and even more fruit, I had her use Shaklee 180 Smoothees.  She liked the Vanilla Smoothee since she can add apples with cinnamon for an apple pie flavor or add oranges for an “Orange Julius” taste. Make them to your taste for the season you are in. Great protein, easily absorbed, with the right kinds of fiber for healthy digestion.  Perfect!

Now her days are filled with good protein, easily absorbed vitamins and more free time! Shaklee 180 Smoothees, fresh fruit and Shaklee Vitalizer fill the bill! Wow, “juicing” is now simple and easy for Adrienne and others who want to have a healthy start to the day without all the mess and bother.  For more information on Shaklee products mentioned here, visit my Shaklee website  Elise.MyShaklee.com    Stay well, Elise

NSAIDs and Hearing Loss in Women

Well, if it isn’t enough that NSAIDs cause enough problems as it was, now there are studies showing NASIDs are responsible for hearing loss in women!  From an article written earlier this month, I found that NSAIDs can cause many serious problems which include: • heart attack • stroke • high blood pressure • heart failure from body swelling (fluid retention) • kidney problems including kidney failure • bleeding and ulcers in the stomach and intestine • life-threatening allergic reactions and more. All this for an anti-inflammatory! Yuck.

Now in a study published on September 15, 2012 in the American Journal of Epidemiology,  “In this study, use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen (but not aspirin) 2 or more days per week was associated with an increased risk of hearing loss in women.”  It has already been established that “Use of analgesics is common and is associated with increased risk of hearing loss in men.”

From the Harvard Gazette:  “More than 50 percent of American adults suffer from high-frequency hearing loss by the time they reach 60 years old. One-third of women in their 50s and nearly two-thirds in their 60s have experienced hearing loss. According to the World Health Organization, adult-onset hearing loss is the sixth most common disease burden in high-income countries.”

Use this safe link to find Alternatives to NSAIDs that work without causing hearing loss, stomach issues, heart problem and more.  Anti-inflammatory options work well and the side effect is better health!

A New Way to Think about Supplementation

As you know from my many posts, I take Shaklee Supplements each day.  I have been doing this since 2004.  The many benefits of proper supplementation with whole health supplements have been everything from good cholesterol to no more sinus infections to more energy and focus each day.

When I speak with others about adding Alfalfa to their daily regime to lower their inflammation and help their sinus problems, they often start grumbling about taking 10 little tablets! 10 little tablets, not 10 giant horse pills, little tablets to help you breathe better and feel better.  Sigh….

But today I heard an interesting explanation of why we need to supplement with vitamins.  I heard a gentlemen say that since the body needs certain nutrients that we often don’t get in our food, we need to take supplements as well as seek high quality sources of our daily food.  His reasoning was that our cells are constantly renewing themselves.  If we don’t have the proper nutrients for the cells to reproduce correctly, we will begin to get bad cells reproducing!  Disease will follow and old age will accelerate.  So in his mind, taking good supplements only made sense!

And he is a very young looking and young acting Senior!  So follow his advise if not mine and supplement with good nutrition such as my Shaklee products, eat organic local produce and exercise frequently!  Stay well and healthy.

Questions to Ask Your Supplement Company

I was recently asked by a friend. “What makes  your Shaklee vitamins so much better than my multi-vitamin/mineral tablet?”  It is a fair question.  Most people don’t understand the difference between natural and artificial vitamins.  Even the supplements from the “Health Food” stores are often not as wholesome as one would think.

My friend has been taking the regular multi-vitamin/mineral tablets that you get in those huge bottles at the wholesale clubs and discount stores. The ones with the important sounding words on the bottles, filled with artificial colors.  Another friend is looking at some multi-vitamins from a Health Food store and was chiming in on the same conversation.  Just how is Shaklee different?

After talking about the quality of the Shaklee products, the safety built in to each of the Shaklee products, the published peer-reviewed research backing Shaklee products, I gave the ladies a few questions to ask their supplement company so they would then have more information.

Here are some Questions to Ask Your Supplement Company:

1. How long has your supplement company been in the nutritional supplement business?  What is your track record with recalled products?

2. Are your supplements made by your company under the guidance of your staff or are they made by a third party with your label added to the bottle?

3. Are the ingredients in your supplements naturally and organically sourced or do you use synthetic substitutes for naturally available ingredients?

4. Are your products based on your own peer-reviewed scientific studies, or do you “borrow” science from other companies?

5. How about testing on ingredients and final products?  Do you test the ingredients all along the process, at the end or rely on vendors for testing?  Is the final product in the bottle what is listed on the bottle?

6. Does your company offer a 100% Money Back Guarantee, even on open bottles or used product?  Do you have a free Product Hotline for customer information?

I am certain that once you start asking these questions, you will find more to ask.  Being informed is your responsibility.  It is your right to know about the products you ingest.  Don’t take anything that is not up to the highest standards available.  You deserve the best!

Holiday Stress Relief

It is here, the holidays!  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or don’t celebrate at all, there is stress in our lives.  How we deal with that stress, the good old every day kind as well as the elevated levels during special events is important.

Be Healthy

Stress is part of living, but it does not have to kill us.  We need to learn to be aware of the triggers of stress and then reduce the stress.  Sounds easy, right?  Ever tried to get rid of a stress trigger when you are married to it or work with it?  I know, you can’t get away from those triggers some time.  However, how you react to those triggers is under your control.

Now, I am not saying it is easy to ignore those things that push your buttons and add to your stress levels.  But  you do have the power to change to way you look at things! (Thanks to Dr Wayne Dyer for that one.)   When you decide not to react to an external stress,  you can find ways to diffuse the reaction.  Even if you have to just smile and bite your lip.  By not taking the bait you are now in control of  your emotions.  Hold onto that control.

Stress is not healthy if we don’t release that stress daily.  Exercise is great for stress relief.  Play with the children, take the dog for walk, dance with a partner, play a few games of the Wii fit, have fun, laugh with abandon.

Leave the cell phone at home or off.  Getting the stress out of your day begins when you let the day go.    Keeping in-touch with everyone all the time does not give you time to let go of stress.  Emails, text messages, phone calls and IMs are great ways to communicate.  Letting these methods take over our lives is not healthy.  The OFF button is there for a reason, use it daily.

As I have explored in earlier posts, Diet, Exercise and Wise Supplementation are the ways to prevent up to 75%  of such diseases as Heart Disease, Stroke, Cancer, Obesity and Diabetes.  See Sick & Tired of Being Sick & Tired.   Stay well and enjoy your life!

A Look at Cholesterol

We have been talking about taking responsibility for our personal health in the past few posts.  Heart Disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and obesity have been shown to be 75 % preventable.  So the burden is on us to do the preventing.  By the time we get a diagnosis of a disease, the prevention part is long past!

Cholesterol is always in the forefront of advertising and on your doctor’s mind.  One reason is that in 2007, it was estimated that between 30 to 36 million Americans were taking statin drugs to control their cholesterol.  Those prescriptions added up to about $34 BILLION per year!  No wonder it is getting so much attention.  $34Billion a year in revenue is a good take.  So the advertising is working.  We are taking those statin drugs.

But we need Cholesterol for our bodies to function properly.  Did you know that!?!  Our bodies manufacture Cholesterol for several important functions.  Did you know that the outer membrane of each of our cells is formed from cholesterol?  Cholesterol also controls the permeability of the cell walls.  This permeability allows various substances to flow into the cells.

Cholesterol is also used to make hormones which carry chemical signals to our bodies. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone as well are the adrenal hormone cortisol are all created from cholesterol.

And, did you know that Cholesterol is also important for the production of bile in the liver?  The bile is used by the liver to break down fats and helps in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins in the intestines.  It is used to insulate nerve fibers so the nerve signals travel properly from place to place.

So we need cholesterol! But we need to be careful that we don’t have too much or too little.  There needs to be a proper balance between the different types of cholesterol for our bodies to function at top form.  We will talk more about that balance in our next post!  Stay Well!
