Throw away that Heart Shaped Box!

It is that time of year when we are accosted with ads for candy, diamonds and more candy.  This year is the year to throw away that Heart Shaped Box and do something Out of the Box!pictures_of_hearts

Now what could that be, you might be asking yourself since you were wanting to have a few choice pieces from that heart shaped box.  Well, thinking of new and fun things to do just takes a few minutes of looking around your local area to see what opportunities await your senses.

Look for a cooking class, something fun that you two can do together.  Cooking a fun, different meal together can lead to a whole new side to your relationship.   Who knows what talents you both might have when working together in the kitchen.  Experiment with different spices, different vegetables, different recipes.  Have fun and laugh.  This could be the start of many new traditions.

Volunteer in your area or the surrounding areas.  There have been so many storms IMG_3620 Old Barn 150dpi 5x7and fires this past year that many people are still struggling with repairs to homes and businesses.  Reach out to one of the local churches or Habitat for Humanity for their volunteer programs.  You may have talents in building or painting that would be of help, or you could partner with others to move much needed supplies to a stricken area.  Bringing a hot cup of coffee and a hot meal to those working to repair their lives can make a big difference in the day of a survivor.  And the benefits to yourself are immense

Plan a day trip to one of the local “tourist sites” that most locals never visit.  Many people live in a town with a wonderful museum, park, factory or historic site that they have never visited.  So “play tourist” for a day and visit something local.  Tour that dairy farm outside of town that makes that wonderful cheese you both love.  Wineries and Vineyards are popular tours, look for a new wine to share with that meal you cooked from your cooking class!  Our area is full of Revolutionary and Civil War battle grounds, so if you are a history enthusiast, visit your local historic sites.  Have fun doing something out of the ordinary!

Get creative, have fun, plan the budget so you don’t get in trouble with the costs, laugh as you explore new things together!  Elise

Easy Open is still an Oxymoron!

Some how it keeps happening to me.  I get a package of some sort with the words “Easy Open” printed prominently on the package.  Great I think, I can easily get to my whatever and munch away to my heart’s content.  How could I ever be so wrong?!?

I had the opportunity to fly to New York and spend some wonderful time with friends in Yonkers! Wonderful food, marvelous friends and perfect weather.  If you are in Yonkers, head

Anna Artuso's Pastry Shop Specialty Cake

over to McLean Avenue and  Anna Artuso Pastry Shop for the BEST in Italian pastries along with great Irish and Italian restaurants.  I gain weight just breathing the air in the pastry shop.  Stop in, say hello to RJ and his crew and be prepared to take home box after box of goodies.  At least their boxes are truly easy to open!

But I digress.  One the flight up to NY, I was offered a really bad cup of coffee.  Sorry Delta, Southwest has so much better coffee.  Anyway, as I was trying to sip the not-so-palatable coffee, I was also trying to carefully open one of their packages with Biscotti cookies inside.  Long,  somewhat narrow package, 2 thin cookies high.  Should be simple enough to get open.  Ha!  I tugged on both ends.  Nothing.  I then did the opposite way twist on both ends thinking the area where all the sides met the ends would be weaker, and let me in to get to the Biscotti.  HA!

So there I am, it is 6:45AM and I have a cup of really bad coffee and no way to open this little Biscotti package.  You can’t carry scissors anymore, no sharp nail files, no letter openers.  Finally after several minutes of wrestling with the red package, I finally got it open!  The opposite twist at one end finally did the trick.  But then the whole package started to fall apart.  It was as if once you got a chink in the armor, the rest feel apart. Easy open fail #1.

As the day continued, the opportunity to have some legendary airline peanuts came along with a small cup of Coca Cola (enough with the bad coffee).  Peanuts are some of  my

Stuckey's Candy

favorite munchies, being from Georgia where peanuts and pecans are so very good.  Spent high school years in Eastman, GA where Stuckey’s Candy was founded.  Right in the midst of peanut and pecan country.  Yummy treats that can each be cooked, used in cooking and eaten by the handfuls.

Now these little packages contain about 21 peanuts, all roasted and salty.  Just need about 21 bags to make it worth my while to try to open just one without scissors or a knife.  Again I am struggling to open the package.  No arm movements are enough since the package is just not budging at the little place where the opening is supposed to be.  Finally I turn the package over, twist and peanuts pour out!  Easy open #2!

Today the fun continued with Easy Open #3,  with a box of Peanut Butter Cookies, natural ones in a simple but well closed box.  First of all the construction of the box leads you to believe that the makers don’t want to hurt the environment any more than necessary, so there is no built in closure slots on the top.  Then, once you do manage to open the box, the package with those yummy cookies manages to slice itself all the way from top to bottom!  So I guess the idea of natural Peanut Cookies is to put them in a piece of Tupperware after opening so you can immediately recycle the box!

Easy Open is an Oxymoron!  Will I never learn?  Laughter seems to be the best way to deal with the term Easy Open!  Laugh when I see the term and head for the drawer with the scissors!

Stay well and have fun!!

Great Friends and Great Food Make for a Wonderful Weekend

Traveling is one of my favorite things to do.  I enjoy visiting Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, Mount Hood, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver BC and Victoria BC.  The list is really longer, but this blog is not that long!  Visiting fun places is always exciting.

This time however, I am getting to visit with some really wonderful friends.  Now when friends are able to visit together, I am so very happy.  The thing about great friends is that they are now family.  When we are all together, it is like we have not been apart for years.  That is just the way it is with great friends.

So if you haven’ t seen some of your old friends in some time, call them up and arrange a long weekend together.  Food, friends and family make life worth all the crazy things that happen the rest of the time!  Enjoy!

Commander Mark Kelly & Vitalizer in Space!

On May 16, 2011, Commander Mark Kelly had an historic flight on the Space Shuttle Endeavor’s last flight.  He has had a long and diverse career.  In 1987 he became a naval aviator and made two deployments  to the Persian Gulf on the aircraft carrier Midway, flying 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm.   Captain Kelly attended the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School from June 1993 to June 1994. Logging more than 5,000 hours in more than 50 different aircraft, he has over 375 carrier landings.

Commander Kelly’s first mission to space was in December 2001 on the Space Shuttle Endeavor.  His final mission was again on Endeavor’s last mission.  It was a successful mission with the crew installing the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to the ISS. AMS is a 15,000-lb cosmic particle detector that was installed on the outside of the space station. Its experiments will help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter and antimatter.  Sounds really cool to me!

Commander Mark Kelly at Shaklee Global Conference

On August 12, 2011, Commander Kelly took the stage at Shaklee’s Global Conference in Washington, D.C..  We were all captivated by his time with us, talking about his career and space travels as well as his marriage to U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  Inspired by his courage and determination, Mark reminded us that persistence and practice are the way to reach our goals.

Commander Mark Kelly & Vitalizer in Space

While out in space as well as on earth, Mark is a user of Shaklee Supplements!  He learned about the Shaklee products when he joined the Space Program.  Since 1993, Shaklee has been providing NASA with a customized re-hydration beverage for use by Shuttle astronauts in 1993 and its use continues today.   As you can see from the image, Mark takes his Shaklee Supplements seriously, by taking them into space with him on his missions!

Preparing for a Long Drive

Well, conference is coming up soon and I have been thinking about that long drive.  While I love to travel, driving can be tiring at times, especially in this late summer heat.  This particular journey is going to be confined to Interstate travel, so the scenery will not be as “scenic” as my camera would like.  Friends and colleagues are coming with me on this journey, sharing the driving responsibilities as well as the gas money!  Map reading will be at a minimum.

This could be a car from Shaklee!

Making a car trip  takes planning for me.  I don’t like to eat fast food as I travel for several reasons.  One main reason is the price for fast food when close to an Interstate Hwy is usually higher than when the same food is in a neighborhood.  Plus, the fat content and carbohydrate levels are usually high also.  Driving does not use that much energy, compared to the number ingested with hamburgers, fries and cokes.  Oh how I love good french fries! Yummy.  But not healthy.

Now I have to plan my snacks and meals along the way so I can stay energized and ready for conference when I arrive.  I am making my list already, planning my shopping trip, and wishing the car was larger!  For this trip, which we will do in 2 days of 7 or so hours of driving, I am taking some of my favorite Shaklee Cinch Products, popcorn (watch the salt), apples, Get Clean Water pitcher for fresh water on the road, green tea bags and Cinch Tea Packets, and some cookies.

Be Healthy

The Cinch Lemon-Cranberry Snack Bars are my favorites!  Along with the Peanut Butter Snack Bars, I will have a good balance of protein and carbohydrates since the bars are low glycemic. They make a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack anytime, but are really good for travels.  On airplanes they really fill that hungry spot!

Since I travel with the Get Clean Water Pitcher, I have fresh filtered water when I am thirsty.  Adding Cinch Tea or a green tea bag to my water bottle adds some good anti-oxidants as well as flavor to my water.  Staying hydrated while traveling is important.  When you become dehydrated, your brain is effected.  The one thing you need to have working well while driving is your brain!  Make good decisions while on the road.

Get Clean Water

Get Clean Water

I keep a cooler in the front seat with sliced apples, peanut butter and extra ice for my tea.  Having the cool apple slices and the peanut butter gives me a good snack with fiber, flavor and crunch.   When I stop along the way I take a few minutes in the rest area to spread some of the peanut butter on the ends of a few of the apple slices for a quick snack.  Keeping the fuel and water coming in, keeps me awake and ready to drive safely.  When flying, I do something similar, but don’t have the cooler.

Some of the traveling I do is lengthy. Using the Cinch Shakes along those long journeys really keeps me fueled and focused.  Cinch Shakes are filled with good protein, vitamins, minerals and flavor.  I use the Cinch Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry Shakes.  When traveling in a car you can use the canisters.  But for airplanes, I find the packets work best.  One packet per meal and you are done!  Makes the luggage lighter as you continue on your journey.

So when you get ready for your next trip, whether it is across town or across country, take a few minutes to plan your meals, take some healthy snacks, water bottles with your filtered Get Clean Water and have fun in this beautiful country!  Fuel for you is as important as fuel for the car!  Stay well.

A New House Every 7 Years!

How would you like  a new house every 7 years?  Wow, that would be a great perk wouldn’t it?  Imagine getting a new home every 7 years, all fresh and clean.  It would be a dream come true for so many.  But there is a catch to this dream.

The catch is that the new home is only as nice as the way you have kept the current one you have.  So if your plumping is bad in your old home, the new house will also have bad plumbing.  If you have upgraded the heating and cooling systems in the old house then the new house will have new, upgraded heating and cooling systems!  So the trick is to keep your current home in the best possible condition so that when you get the new home every 7 years, it is the best it can be!

Not a bad deal now is it?  Keep your current home in great condition in order to get a new home in the same condition!  New home with a new “start” date.  You would not want a new home that was not in perfect condition would you?  I don’t want a new home that is not in the best condition possible.

However,  we all have a home that we don’t treat as well as we can.  We all live in a home that is replaced every 7 years and we don’t even think about how we really take care of it most of the time.  That home is our body, our only true home.  And since our cells renew frequently, we get a “new body” about every 7 years!  Wow, think how nice it would be to take care of our current body so that our new body will be healthy and ready to take us into next phase of our lives, healthy and ready to go!

So how do we accomplish this healthy new home?  Well, it takes work and planning.  I know, work is not “fun” but healthy bodies are fun!  Working on your body can be easier than you think.   Thinking about what you eat, how you exercise and how you supplement your diet.  Three easy things to do,  lifestyle choices that reflect healthier choices will pay dividends for years to come.  Be diligent now will avoid many illness later.  And that new body you get every 7 years will be ready to work for you for 7 more healthy years!

So get off the couch and walk the dogs, play with the kids, walk around the block, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park further away from the building, move!  Then look at your food choices.  Drink lots off filtered fresh water, eat organic foods (no artificial, processed foods), and keep add soy protein to your daily meals.

Then look at the absences in your nutrition and add whole food supplements, natural & organic supplements to fill in the nutrition gaps.  Supplementing your nutritional gaps is necessary since no one eats every nutrient their body needs.    So carefully add whole food nutrients to your daily routine to fill in the blanks in your nutritional gaps.  That way your new “body” will be healthy and ready to give you a healthy life!

Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Home

Cleaning our homes and work spaces is an ongoing project.  It is a reward to look at our sparkling clean kitchen or bathroom for that minute or two before some decides to cook another pot of spaghetti sauce or take a long hot shower!  So much for our sparkling looks now.

But looks can be deceiving.  We have heard that one before.  But with clean it is true.  The advertizing people have done a good job of convincing us that clean must smell like something, pine, floral, lemon or the breeze.  What does a breeze smell like?

Cleaning and disinfecting are two different processes.  Most products on the market do one or the other.  Some do both.  I have discovered a type of cleaning and disinfecting products that are effective in killing germs and cleaning surfaces at the same time.  These cleaners are called Quartenary Ammonium Compounds.  Long name, but they are effective.

These Quartneary Ammonium Compounds or “Quats”, cleaning products disinfect as well as clean the surface.  Chlorine bleach disinfects but you have to clean the surface separately adding another expensive step to the process.   Quats are also have a neutral ph so they do not damage surfaces being cleaned and disinfected like chlorine bleach.  They are also effective order control agents when used according to label instructions.  For more general information on Quats see an article by Roger McFadden who is Technical Director for Coastwide Laboratories.

I am excited since I only just realized that I have been using a Quats for years.  I knew the product worked well around my house, especially with the kitties.  But I never really understood how amazing the product is!  I have been using Shaklee’s Basic-G® Concentrated Germicide. It is a registered EPA germicide and is effective against 56 pathogens comprised of viruses, bacteria and fungi.  Since Shaklee’s Basic G carries the EPA registration number on its label you can be certain that is has been proven, under scientific conditions to be effective against various bacteria and other pathogens listed on the label.  MSRA and Influenza A are just 2 of the pathogens that Basic G is effective against.

Since chlorine bleach has so many negatives, it is easy to see why the Basic G type products are so popular with consumers.  Remember, chlorine bleach products may be cheap in upfront costs, but they are not detergents so they don’t clean, only disinfect.  Chlorine bleach products react with other chemicals that might be present when cleaning to product toxic gases.  Attack hard surfaces causing damage especially on flooring.  And worse, they have unpleasant orders and while they lose their strength rapidly make them not so cheap after all.

The one quart container of Basic G from Shaklee dilutes to 64 gallons of non-toxic cleaning solution when diluted according to directions.   In its concentrated state it is a toxic substance and must be handled as such.  But once diluted properly, Basic G has cleansing functionalities along with the disinfecting so there is no need to mix with other solutions.

So when you really need to clean your home, purchase some Shaklee Basic G along with the accompanying Spray Bottle for dilution, read the label carefully and clean, disinfect and deodorize your home.  I am careful around the kittes, but use the diluted spray around their litter boxes making certain the solution is dry before the kitties return.  I also use Basic G in my vacation home,  when I travel in staying in a hotel room or cruise ship cabin.  Shaklee even has some wipes that you can carry with you as you fly to help keeps the germs away.  The wipes are from the Get Clean line and  are called Germ Off Fragrance Free Disinfecting Wipes.

Stay safe as you travel and have a safe, germ free home.

Endeavor and Shaklee Head to Space

Shuttle over Bay Lake

Wow, what a beautiful launch this morning!  Endeavor and its crew is on it’s last mission to the International Space Station.  Sad for me really.  I am a big supporter of space travel and would like to be able to experience space travel my self.  However, I don’t have the money nor probably the courage to undertake a trip just now!  But I can Dream!

My business partner, Shaklee, has a role in the continued success of the Space Program.  Shaklee has been supplying NASA with a special re-hydration product called Astro-Ade.  NASA came to Shaklee in the early 1990’s to  ask for assistance in keeping the astronauts while returning to earth.  Astronauts experience GRS, or General Re-entry Syndrome.  GRS’s symptoms include vertigo, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, disequilibrium and general debilitation occurring during reentry to earth’s atmosphere and immediately after landing. AstroAde was specifically designed by Shaklee in conjunction with NASA scientists to combat this unique set of challenges facing the shuttle astronauts.

As we go about our busy, rushed live, we too face some interesting challenges.  Fast Food has too many calories, too much fat, not enough fresh ingredients, too many processed foods with too many preservatives.  We eat entirely too many processed meals, microwave, pre-packaged food.  We have stressful lives and don’t get enough exercise, good fresh foods and the correct supplements to fill in the blanks in our daily nutrition.

Cinch Snack Bars

Our options for good health increase when we add exercise, good fresh, organic foods and Shaklee Supplements to our daily regimen.  From the Cinch Shakes, Vitalizer (80 Bio-Optimized Vitamins and Minerals)  and Vivix Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic I take each morning to the Alfalfa Complex that keeps my sinus happy, to the Cinch Snack bars and Cinch tea that I enjoy mid-afternoon, I have more energy, better blood pressure, better cholesterol and better tri-gylcerides than before I started on Shaklee products many years ago.

I still need to walk more each day and reduce stress of course!  We all need to take better care of ourselves.  So to stay healthy like the Astronauts,  Join me in Shaklee for  better health.

Travel and Fall

Well, Fall and Football are underway.  Lots of us are tailgating each weekend as our favorite team plays in different opponents.  The love of gathering with friends and family on a crisp Saturday on a college campus.  But going to these gatherings means travel and travel is always a challenge.

When I travel I prepare ahead of time for the trip.  Not only do I check on the car’s readiness, I make certain that I have food and snacks for me.  Just as my car needs quality oil and gas to run properly, my body needs good food to run properly too.

Fast Food is not good food.  Yes, it tastes good sometimes, but the nutritional value of that good taste is usually not worth the calories and carbohydrates.  So I carry apples, bananas, nuts, Cinch Lemon Cranberry Snack Bars, Cinch Shakes, Cinch Tea and the Get Clean Water Pitcher for filtered water.

Cinch Snack Bars

Having these foods with me, I have great food for travel since the protein to carb ratio is great!  I get the energy I need and the protein I need, but do not have empty calories to slow me down.  Staying focused, sharp and alert  is necessary for a safe trip.  So travel safe and smart!
