"Life is precious—and health is its most important resource."   Dr Jamie McManus, MD

Children grow at a much faster rate during their first few years than at any other time in their lives, stressing the need for parents to ensure optimal nutrition. Of special importance are macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) that provide calories and essential vitamins and minerals critical to proper growth, development, and immune function—including all eight B vitamins and vitamins C, A, and D, as well as calcium, iron, and zinc. In addition, growing children should achieve adequate intakes of omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA, which is essential for early brain and eye development.

New Baby!  Sweet sounding words.  Since there is no more precious gift than a brand-new, beautiful baby—and the ongoing protection of that baby as he or she grows to the teen year and beyond is of utmost concern to you all. But the 21st century has brought new challenges and threats to our children’s health—from fast food and inactivity leading to a growing epidemic of overweight children, to adult diseases such as hypertension and type-2 diabetes being diagnosed in children, to the emerging concerns about toxic chemicals in our environment being linked to the increased diagnoses of asthma.  It is sometimes hard to know where to turn when you need answers to issues facing your children and your family.

Babies are the most precious gifts in the world and it’s up to us to keep them safe and healthy. There are a lot of things to worry about when it comes to our little ones—what we put on their skin shouldn’t be one of them. Chemicals such as phthalates, parabens, and sodium lauryl sulfate—ingredients that can be skin irritants or endocrine disruptors—have turned up in shampoos, lotions, and baby washes. These products also may contain harmful chemical by-products such as formaldehyde, which the EPA classifies as probable carcinogens.

In a recent article by Pamela Bond, "A new study has linked phthalates, a substance used in some shampoos, lotions, air fresheners and children’s toys, with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Although research on the health effects of phthalates (pronounced “thalates”) has been somewhat inconsistent, the latest study, published in Biological Psychiatry, adds to troubling findings about the chemical."
